911 Guys-help on 991s

Post by dukerules » Sat Mar 10, 2018 3:30 pm

While I was checking out 718 Caymans at the dealer today, I test drove a 2013 911 Carrera. I think I could swing a 4-5 year old 911 Carrera pretty easily (I would likely not step up to the S or Carrera 4, and certainly not anything above those), and I'm fairly sure it would put a big smile on my face every time I drove it. This generation of 911s seems well-regarded in general. Anything I need to look out for? Sweet spot in terms of model years? Should I get a 718 Cayman or Cayman S instead?

I've never driven a 718 Cayman but owned (until last week) a Cayman R which is based on the 987.2 and driven a 981 Cayman and Cayman S. If you can swing it, I'd always opt for an 'S' model. The non-S models always seem a little underpowered and less engaging to me.

It's really tough to beat a Cayman (assuming you can live without a back seat and a sunroof). Despite Porsche not allowing it to leapfrog the 911 in terms of ultimate performance, they're fantastic cars. The handling is unbelievable. I prefer the 987.2 over the 981 - the interior of the 987.2 is more sportscar-like IMO and I love the way it envelops the driver. Again, I've never driven a 718 but I have a hard time wrapping my head around a turbocharged four-cylinder Cayman. The flat-six is a much more desirable power plant for most Porsche enthusiasts.

A 6 cylinder is always preferred over a turbocharged 4 cylinder. European Union tree huggers be damned :)

It isn't just the Euro tree huggers. It's CAFE, too. Let's hope this insanity gets overturned.

I get that these turbo 4s lack a lot of the appeal of the old flat-6's. The sound hit alone is almost a deal breaker. But I'll tell you that you forget a lot of that when you floor the throttle in one of these new Caymans.

Any thoughts on the 991s? Worth it to go 991.2 over a 991.1?
