There are also crazy drivers here in FL, especially on I-4 and I-75. There's not a day we travel to Disney where it is accident free. Being in a large, well built vehicle gives me a peace of mind when I drive with my wife and four babies, or when my wife drives our little boys to and from school. People texting while driving is a game changer for me so unfortunately that is also one of the reasons for getting a larger vehicle.
I feel the same way in my wife's van, however the statistics don't back up the feeling of safety, especially with SUV's. Minicompact cars don't do well, but traditional compact car's such as the Civic, Mazda 3, Subaru Impreza, VW Golf, etc... tend to just as well as SUV's in testing and real world death statistics. There are two primary drivers of this: 1. Cars handle better and with a lower center of gravity are more likely to avoid accidents or rollovers. 2. Many accident's are single vehicles running into fixed objects. The extra mass of a large vehicle is actually working against it in fixed object collisions.

Next year, my trusty Lexus IS350 will be 10 years old. I should keep driving it, as I think it's just getting broken in, but I'm bored of it. Thinking hard about a Cayman or Merc AMG C63. Does anyone have thoughts on modern Mercedes reliability?

Truck prices are no joke today. A moderately equipped V8 gas 1500 will easily run into the upper 40s. Make the switch to diesel and you can easily get into 60k without blinking.

Yes - it is BS. SUV's are even worse. My wife want a full size SUV and those are ridiculously expensive. Like 50k with cloth seats..

You can get a hell of a nice car for the price of a ho-hum suv or truck...
What's full size to her? Have you looked into the Nissan pathfinder or is she wanting an Expediton sized vehicle? The Nissan is a good vehicle and you can get it reasonably fully equipped for like 40k.

She actually has a Nissan Pathfinder now. It is a nice vehicle, she just would like something a bit bigger. I think that new Nissan Armada is the target now. I'm planning on waiting another year or so so we can pick up a used one.

We live in a small town in Arkansas, so having a large vehicle is not a big deal as far as getting around or parking. I'm 6'4" with long arms and legs and just feel more comfortable in a large car. That being said -If I lived in a city, there is no way I'd have a truck or a big SUV, they are tough to maneuver in tight quarters.

My wife has requested a Denali XL for her next vehicle. Price is insane.
I'd tell my wife to eat a d if she wanted one of those. None of the trucks or SUVs are worth their asking price. I don't understand where people get the coin to buy these new vehicles.

This reminds me of comments from a friend after he looked at new Escalades. He owned one about 10-15 years ago, but took one look at $90k and walked away.
Seriously. Once you go beyond 60k for an SUV, you should go Porsche.
Says the guy with no kids.

Yah safety is big for me too. The 2016 MDX has been incredibly fun to drive. Acura's torque vectoring system is sporty as hell. Plus we get all the active safety features, which are awesome. The plan now is to add a new Honda Ridgeline (for shlepping plants, bags of mulch, etc.) and Volvo V90 to the fleet.

We just added a Mazda CX-9 to our fleet for transporting my mom and 96 year old step dad as well as family ski trips. Have a Miata for summer and a Subaru for daily driver. Then there's the land cruiser that's basically an island vehicle.

It looks nice. I thought that was a radar detector, but I want certain. They're one of the best inventions ever made!

That they are! Mine has saved me more times than I can count. The only downside is that they are essentially useless against laser.
