I like the looks of the Q50S Infiniti. Paddle shifters though, no manual.

Subarus and VW golf's must be a regional thing. No one drives them in the south except maybe high school kids with loud exhausts.

There is little need for AWD in the South.

It's getting harder to find a nice "sporty" sedan with a manual transmission and rwd/awd (specially in the US) that's not a BMW or Audi. My original plan was (as already recommended in the thread), BMW 3 series CPO (maybe an E46 or E92 M3) or Audi S4 CPO. If going new, WRX (hoping we get a wagon again). Because of this, I've started to weigh on another option: keep/get a "people mover" car (my current Accord, small SUV or wagon, tacoma or ridgeline) and then add a 2 door fun car.

I need to try a manual Mini, GTI and Focus ST. I'm bias on having a fun car that is fwd (had an RSX and a Miata, prefered the Miata even though it was slower), but a lot of people say those three are really fun to drive.

A Subaru BRZ or 2015+ Mustang seem like fun, relatively cheap cars.

You've never seen a lot of Subis unless you've been to CO. Between those, Jeeps and 4runners, there are basically no other vehicles on the road. I love it.

I've had an A4 1.8T with extensive upgrades by APR and a VW R32. I'm thinking of going back to a GTI or an R when I get rid of my pickup.
I have an 1.8T with APR chip / downpipe & exhaust + intake upgrades (+ suspension, spacers etc etc).

Fun car but finally getting too old.

APR makes awesome software for VW.

Lived in CO for 4 yrs. (trust me, the VW scene is quite strong there) and Maine is no different in vehicle selection ;)

I had a GTI and a Rabbit. They get small quickly with kids.
If you are open to a wagon or X1, take a look at the new Mini Countryman.

I like the countryman a lot. Honestly, the interiors are nicer than most modern BMWs. I tried to convince my wife into one when her x1 for totalled, but she wanted a bigger ute.

Golf/ GTI is a lot bigger than it used to be. Interior space is somewhere between the X1 and the Countryman, FYI.

That Fiat is butt-ugly.

Another vehicle I like is the Mazda CX-5. Wish they made a suped-up version.

I'd say get a trick muffler or exhaust system if you want growl. They can make a six sound like an eight.
Not as much can be done for a four though. They typically get buzzy, though the 2.4-L on our RDX sounds kind of decent when you get on it. Not a growl. More of a scream.

I've thought about that several times. Every few years seems that someone at work gets hit and badly injured. Always puts a damper on that topic for me.

CX-5 is nice and lots of bang for the buck.
I was downsizing a few months ago and came close to getting one of these. I was coming from a caddy and in the end they made made me a great deal on my trade and a demo XT5 so went that way.

So, a recommendation for cx-5 and xt-5
