New MTB help

Post by james80 » Thu Jul 06, 2017 9:54 am

I just got my bike back after a rebuild, failure, back to shop etc etc and started riding again. It's not cutting it and I'm back to shopping for a bike. I'm looking at the following bikes and wondered if anyone has experience with 1x11 vs 2x10. The two main options now are a Scott Scale 960, Shimano 2x10, or Scale 965, almost the same spec but SRAM NX 1x11 and slightly cheaper.

Current ride

Won't be able to give you a lot of help, but my new Trek Superfly 5 came with a 2x10 Shimano drivetrain and I like it a lot. The higher end Superfly comes with a 1x11 if I remember correctly... plus some of the pro's are using 1x12.

It kind of depends how much climbing you plan on doing. Out here we do a lot of technical riding (NH), but our climbs don't tend to be as long. Most riders here prefer the 1x systems for that reason. 2x's are nice to have when you have a lot of climbs, and the jumps between gears aren't as noticeable (particularly if you are more of a spinner than a masher). Most of the guys with 2x systems spend most of their time in the smaller chainring. Just my .02 (and experience from working in a bike shop past 3 years). I would suggest that you look for Boost hubsets no matter what you get--that's the way the industry is going and they do make a difference.

I ride Sram after years of Shimano and have no issues with sram on my Surly Wednesday....

So you are going from FS to Hardtail? that 965 looks great.... A few people I ride with love the Scotts they have --- I seem more interested in Scott, Kona, Norco, Salsa.... than the majors like Giant, Trek and Spesh....

I like the 1x11. Less maintenance and less weight. Also, if you have a dropper post, the lever will be a cleaner install on the left side with a 1x11.

We have it on both 29ers and we both have 2x10 on our fat bikes. Wish I had upgraded the fat bikes too.

I have a Trek Superfly 5 hardtail that converted to a 1x setup because I never used the small chain ring even when climbing. My new Diamondback Release 3 has a 1x11. I just like the simplicity of the 1x's; less clutter on the bar, 1 derailleur, 1 front ring, etc.

Nothing hard core, just trails not too technical. That's why I went with a hardtail. I also ride on the road on this bike, so I'm happy with the 2x10.

Deore XT is still available and it's still just below the XTR (pro) line. LX was replaced by SLX.
