I don't know if they are truly underrated, or just not a widely popular sound, but I've been a Social Distortion fan since the late eighties and they are still around to see live.
I love some SOD.
A great song writing duo that wrote a ton of stuff that became popular by others but only released a handful records of their own is Lowen and Navarro. Lowen passed away from ALS about 10 years ago, but their music still holds up.
Love their version of "Ball and Chain"

I'm sitting here by the pool smoking a nice stogie and put on some music by Live. It got me to thinking how much I really love their music. I think there are/were very underrated. Especially their first three albums. I've seen them three times before they broke up. Really awesome show at the House of Blues in Orlando many years ago with the wife.

Do you guys have a favorite underrated band?

We saw the lead singer of Live (Ed Kowalczyk) do a solo acoustic set opening up for Collective Soul a couple years ago, and he still brings it. I would throw Collective Soul on to that list, and always Toad the Wet Sprocket.
Toad is great and so is Collective Soul/Live.

Drink his coffee to be more like him.

This artisan roast has been carefully crafted for the world's most powerful guitarist, Zakk Wylde. With maximum flavor and a high caffeine content, this blend will bring you back from the nights you thought you'd never wake up from. Do you bleed black?

Before I opened the thread, Live was the first band to come to mind. They put out some real solid stuff.
Live was going to be my answer as well. I saw them in concert several times in the 90's.

They opened up for RATM at their last show in LA. My wife and I looked at each other and walked out to get drunk and came back when RATM came back on. Absolute shit. No idea how that statement can be made.

Hysterical. Easily one of the best live acts going. Seen them 7 times and they are brilliant.
If you are a big fan of Rage and Tool you would not like Muse. Completely different brand of music. Probably why you didn't like them live.

Definitely. Dude went broke trying to employ all of Oakland in his stage show.

Not sure I would have gotten down to that in high school but it was top shit in fifth grade.

I like MUSE a lot. The singer/guitarist is super talented and has a great voice. The song "Supremacy" is killer.

Completely different than RATM (killing in the name of!)
