Buying vintage (80s) audio systems.. anything I should know?
My old man was very proud of his 1980-82 Technics separates. I grew up knowing NOT to touch this awesome shrine to music.
Anyway.. long story short.. my old man has gone, so has his stereo stuff, and I've decided to try to re-create it by scouring eBay etc.
I wondered if there are any major pitfalls.. I'm not an audiophile, and don't want to open myself up to a world of pain. Are retro/old systems still fixable/viable etc?

Yes, but you have to do some research.

Too much crap to sort through if you don't know what you're looking at. Stay way from eBay. Check out Audiogon.
Edit: I would imagine you have some great options in the U.K.

Unless you got a ton of free time to do research then I wouldn't do it. Oh and you are behind on making straps, so get back to work you bumHeuerville wrote: ↑Tue Apr 11, 2017 6:59 amThanks for the replies. I'm starting to think it could be a world of pain !

I have a Yamaha RX-V995 receiver from the late 90s. I can't bear to get rid of it even though it's essentially useless to me.

I finally sent my Bose 501's on their way after moving them too many times. As for vintage equipment, look for Onkyo; some of the best. And when comes to Amp's, the heavier the better.

I passed up a Denon receiver I found in Waco goodwill, they wanted almost $100 for it.

I've still got a mid 90's 100 watt Onkyo TXDS797 hooked up to Definitive towers with built in subs, center, and surrounds used mainly for home theater in our great room. Been very happy with Onkyo.

I've found a modern system from Yamaha.. it has the 'old school Technics' look I'm after, I think this is probably the way to go.. (or something similar)
