Met one of my summer goals last night: 1/2 reps Murph
Remember when Shorty posted this:
http://www.thedivewatchconnection.com/f ... ph&start=0
When I read that thread, I had 2 thoughts: one, that's a shitload of pull ups and, two, "the rest doesn't look that hard..."
Says the old, fat musician.
At any rate, while any of the components are doable separately, it took me a while to be able to run/sprint a mile, do 150, 100 and 50 (especially the last part of the 50) then plod the mile again in any sort of reasonable (<hour) time.
I'm happy to say I finally got all the reps (for 1/2 a Murph) in last night. I figure if I can maintain through the school year, I can get back to slowly doubling the pull ups next summer and try to get the whole thing in. No way I'll hit 10 sets of 10 wide grip pull ups before Aug 28. "The rest doesn't look that hard though..."

Good job! I do a Murph twice a week minus the running as I run distance in the morning instead.
I modify too, doing 20 sets of 5, 10, and 15. I stole some beads from my daughter's crafting kit and ran them on a string so I'd have a way to keep track. By about set 15 I'm telling myself "it's just 10 push-ups. Anyone can do it 10 push-ups!"

Re: Met one of my summer goals last night: 1/2 reps Murph
^^^all sorts of combinations over the last couple of months to get the pull ups on line. Last night to get it all under time it was 5 sets of 30 squats (easy), 5 sets of 20 pushups (not bad) and, er, 2 sets of 10, one set of maybe 9 and a set of 1, 2 sets of 5 and a set of 4 and a bunch of 3s and 2s...
I have to use 4x6 post-its and hash marks to keep track. it's a lot of donkey work. But it's clear that when I can actually do 100 pull ups in one session, I'll have it, and it'll be time to look for some body armor.

Use poker chips to keep track of your rounds. It gets hard to stay accurate when you're rounds keep getting shorter and shorter.

Equally effective.toxicavenger wrote:I count the piles of puke on the ground to know where I am at
Actually, your comment reminds me of a high school practice that was so nasty we were all puking through our helmets. I can still remember the kid who had spaghetti for lunch. It looked like he had a beard.

Good work. Pull ups kick my ass the most too. I do a variation but I add in a coupla extra miles, many less pull ups, and a bunch of flutter kicks and other ab stuff. Such a great workout.

For me to obtain this type of goal, several of the zeros would need to be removed! Good job and keep up the great work.

Re: Met one of my summer goals last night: 1/2 reps Murph
This got me thinking about age; when I was competing, I would be doing wide-grip pull-ups with extra weight ( 4 sets of 10) and then I'd thread an old judo jacket on the ends of the bar to do three more sets holding the sleeves to develop grip strength. Now, at 57, I can't jump high enough to reach the bar

I would have to start at 1/4 Murph, but hey it's a start, right?!?

Of course it is. The best time to start was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.rockmastermike wrote:I would have to start at 1/4 Murph, but hey it's a start, right?!?

This aging thing is unkind to pull up ability, for sure. Back in my dojo rat days, I used to do sets of 30.poppydog wrote:This got me thinking about age; when I was competing, I would be doing wide-grip pull-ups with extra weight ( 4 sets of 10) and then I'd thread an old judo jacket on the ends of the bar to do three more sets holding the sleeves to develop grip strength. Umm-without the run it's not even remotely a Murph. It's kind of a crucial element along with the timing of it all.

Re: Met one of my summer goals last night: 1/2 reps Murph
I'm much less worried about a 1 mile run at each end. I'm training for another marathon so I'm running 6 to 8 miles in the morning then doing the rest over the course of about 30 minutes at lunch. Call it what you want. I'm just doing it for the exercise (my push-up / pull-up / squat / not-quite-a- Murph routine on Monday and Friday, shoulders and arms on Wednesday). LSD runs on Sunday.moishlashen wrote:Ryeguy wrote:Good job! I do a Murph twice a week minus the running as I run distance in the morning instead.

As an aside, I don't think you are supposed to break up the exercises into sets either. You are supposed to just plow through each from what I've heard, but then again, I've never taken a cross fit class and likely never will so what do I know.
Re: Met one of my summer goals last night: 1/2 reps Murph
Only the most elite athletes can do Murph straight through. Everyone breaks it up.

Exactly! It stands for Long Slow Distance, but by about mile 15 that is exactly where my head is at.Sidheguitarist wrote:Ryeguy wrote:LSD runs on Sunday.
