And Prince is a straight up 'baller. ;)
No arguments about his prodigious talents there. He has always had an eye for great (hot) female musicians

Does anyone even remember Eddy Shaver?

...and all the pieces Billy Joe Shaver wrote during the Outlaw Country movement in the 1970s.

Now that's pure.

Listen to the way Waylon Jennings and Ralph Mooney go back and forth. Pure.

Talk about underrated.

I like it, but his drummer looks like Tony Little (of infomercial fame) and the bassist is the country Geddy Lee. :bananastoner:

Friend of mine who's made a living playing rock guitar always thought that prince was a very talented guitarist. I'll defer to his opinion. Didn't like a lot of what prince did but there is no denying that the dude was talented.

Absolutely shredded it, and looked like he was having an awesome time, too.

He's one of the best guitarists of all time (and I don't even like the majority of his music, but talent is talent).

He was a great showman and a good songwriter for sure. He was a decent guitar player, but one of the best would be a huge stretch.

Many people who know music a lot better than I do rate him as an all time great.

I came of age in the '80s, and his over-the-top persona didn't do it for me. Like I said, I was never a huge fan of his music. Looking back on it, I think it's definitely true that he was a trailblazer. He's often compared and contrasted with Michael Jackson (who I also didn't particularly like). The way I look at it, Michael was amazing at what he did, but it was basically pop. He just did it better than anyone else. No one really did what Prince did.

I'm no musician, so I don't know what I'm talking about, but his guitar playing speaks to me.
Check out the first performance of Purple Rain, which was actually also the album version (with edits):

Also, while it's not exactly an endorsement from Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Vedder said "Prince was probably the greatest guitar player we’ve ever seen" at a concert last night.

there are two ways to be labeled a "great" guitar player. one is technical and one is "capturing the essence of the song." not everyone who can do the first can do the second. in fact, i think most technically great guitar players don't necessarily have the "soul" of a great guitar player. and a lot of the guys who are great at capturing that essence aren't necessarily the most amazing technical players, perhaps because they don't have to be to do that.

the very rare ones do both well.

He always downplayed his guitar abilities because he didn't want to be known as a great guitarist but rather a great musician. He played nearly every instrument at expert levels-drums, keyboards, saxophone etc.

Who's greatest at playing instruments is arguable but those in the music industry consider him one of the all time great axe players.

Never realized how many hit songs he wrote for other artists under anonymous names. Heard a list on TV tonight and was very surprised.

They say he has enough stuff in the can to release a record every year for the next 50 years. Not all hits etc but all kinds of diverse stuff he recorded for whatever reason.

As Greg alluded to above, Prince was both incredibly technically proficient and had the ability to inject "soul" into his music. It's cliched I know, but it's true. Virtuosity isn't simply about blazing solos, it's also about the silence that happens in-between the notes.
