Marathon.. Size does matter

Post by KWIATEK » Fri Mar 18, 2011 5:22 pm

Sent out the Marathons for a lend and got them back today... recieved in the same box they went out in  (wanted to make sure the SAR was back for Roar to see at the GTG)

Couldn't help but grab this box for shipping. As soon as I saw it, I knew it had potential (with a little additive)
Image

I normally miss the JSAR, but this time I think I missed the zulu more than the watch
I really need to invest in some more Zulus and take the bracelets off a few more watches.

Now to get down to the topic at hand. Many aren't sure of the size difference between the jumbo case and I guess what can be called the standard case on the Marathons. I initially wanted a JSAR, but after reading that so many thought it was too large, I opted for the GSAR. Well... a J went up for sale on WUS a day or two after I purchased my G and just couldn't help myself. The G came from overseas and I ended up getting the J first. I've never been able to bring myself to wear the smaller of the two.
Here are the JSAR and GSAR:

And lug to lug:

Also, many do not know the difference between all the SARs. They can be confusing.. I had to write them down and really study them before I could tell them all apart without double checking, especially the T and G SARS, which are the closest of them all. Here they all are so you can see the difference:
Image
In order left to right: CSAR, JSAR, GSAR, TSAR, & SAR. The black one is the Navigator.

The differences:
CSAR: Jumbo case. Automatic 7750 Valjoux with date & day @ 3 o'clock. Tritium on hour & minute hands and hour markers (has H3 symbol on dial). Lume on sub-dials.

JSAR: Jumbo case. High torque quartz (w/EOL) with date only @ 4:30. Lume, no Tritium.

GSAR: Standard case. Automatic 2824 with date only @ 4:30. Tritium on hour & minute hands and hour markers (has H3 symbol on dial). AUTOMATIC (in white) on lower half of dial along with water rating (in red).

TSAR: Standard case. High torque quartz (w/EOL) with date only @ 4:30. Tritium on hands and hour markers (has H3 symbol on dial). Only water rating is on lower half of dial (in red).

SAR: Standard case. Automatic 2824 with date @ 3 o'clock. Lume, no Tritium. Only model that has only markers at the hours instead of numbers 1-24. Also the only model with a cyclops over the date.

All models have: 120 click uni-directional bezel, screw down crown, sapphire crystal and constructed out of 316L SS, 300m resistant and 6425 ISO compliant, lume (Maraglo) on triangular pip and second hand & comes on rubber strap (Mmmm.. Vanilla  ) with bracelet optional (two different clasps--Canadian Maple Leaf or US Seal)--which is very comfy.

Did I leave anything out?? If I did..

See, Pat, they are not all the same.

Missing from my "collection" are the Adanac, D-SAR, M-SAR and Arctic Ranger :crybaby: One day I hope to have it complete

Please excuse the bad photography... I suck at it :raised:

Damn, Heather, now that's what I call a focused collection! Thanks for taking the time to drop some Marathon knowledge on us rabble in the gallery.

So, which one is your favorite?

awesome Heather. I don't think I've ever seen a thread that features all of those in one pic. Great info. I'll add that the JSAR comes standard with an ISA 1198 high torque quartz movement and can be modified by dropping in an ETA 2824-2 movement if one prefers auto. ;) Keep us posted on your Arctic Ranger quest. :salute:

Overall, the CSAR, but it isn't a daily wear. I wear the crap outta my JSAR, tho  It competes with the Seiko Frankenmonster for a favorite "beater". Those are my two go-tos for everything--nothing phases them. I think after the release of the Arctic Ranger that will slide the CSAR into second place. Now :thatshot: !!

My least favorite of the SARs is the SAR.

OK, so I was the lendee on this one. And she sent it in a box marked DOUCHES. (I didn't notice until I went to return it.)

The post office guy LITERALLY asked the female employee next to him 4-5 times in a loud voice if Douches were hazardous. Old women in line were staring at me, I felt like a 15yr old buying condoms. Hahaha.

Anyway, Heather is good people!!! Thanks again!!

Great post Heather, might have missed one that Marathon called a DSAR and it was the same size as SAR or TSAR but it had a mismarked dial, The dial had a mark that it was tritium(had H3 and Radiation symbol that Benrus used in the 70's) but it was superluminova. there werent many made and after i got my JSAR auto mod from Bo i sold the smaller piece to Kin and kinda wished i kept it! look close at the dial and you can see the screw up!Edit do see where you have the dsar and a couple other still on your list! Super collection Heather!

good read about military watches and why things needed to be posted clearly on the dial!

Great post which helps a lot with my easily confused mind. Excuse my lack of knowledge, but are these watches actually standard issue to certain branches of the US military?

Steve, the US and Canada have a contract with Marathon to build watches for the Government with a small allotment to the general public!

Very cool Heather! You know where to go for your Arctic Ranger when you're ready.

Some Marathon info for folks not familiar with the company, here's a little background on them. I didn't know that they had been a subsidiary of Gallet since 1915! I thought they were bought out by them around 1984, when the first Navigator models were manufactured for US and Canadian forces.
