I wish Rolex would release an updated oysterquartz type case. I really like those.
Have you seen the Tudor royal? It sorta reminds me of them
Also The Zenith Defy Titanium.

I checked into 5 Rolex ADs in downtown HK + a couple contacts. Zero availability of the 36mm Explorer in SS but I managed to see a TT.
It sucks as much as in the pictures.
I guess I just saved 6 grand.
If this the one you really want, I'd say get yourself on a few waitlists. Even with watch sizes trending smaller, I have a hard time believing that a 36mm watch is going to remain unobtanium once the initial hype dies down.

Yeah most of them wouldn’t put me on a waitlist, the rest outright lied to me and said they wouldn’t get any stock until September (in Causeway Bay HK... sure).
No big deal, I’ll try again in a couple months.
I mean I really would love a 36mm Explorer but it’s not like I’m going to lose sleep or pay over RSP for that.

I just get tired very quickly of all the “mmmmh I may take your $6k for a no date SS watch... maybe... I’d be doing you a huge favor”

If I find one great if I don’t I’m going to survive ok.
I've read some very preliminary rumors that things may be loosening up a bit with the AD Rolex shortage, but the impression I get is that it's still tight, and I'm sure it will be for desirable new releases at least for awhile. The frustrating thing is you're going to see them listed with gray dealers within the next month at something like $10K I imagine. It's just not worth dealing with that crap or with any AD games when there are way too many other good watch brands out there that can actually be purchased at MSRP or cheaper.

This is exactly my attitude regarding Rolex now.

I'm approaching one of those "milestone" birthdays where a Rolex might be a consideration, but as much as I admire the brand and their products, I'm just not going to jump through hoops to get one.

I can buy a nice Zenith or IWC, or even a nice Doxa or Seiko (plus a hell of a lot of beer, bait and fuel for the boat) and be just as happy.

Heck, most of the exec's I know are wearing Apple watches now, so I'm not certain you are even impressing too many people any more with a Rolex.

For the new watches, I am sure as hell not going to pay DavidSW prices and I am not going to suck any ADs dick, so I may be in for a long wait.

I sort of want the new Explorer, but I've never had any luck actually buying a Rolex from my local ADs, and I refuse to pay gray market prices, so I guess I'll most likely never get one. Your collection is great BTW.

I'm interested in the 36mm Explorer. I thought it worked just fine and wore more like a 37.5mm on my 7.5" wrist. You know the new version is going to wear the same and feel more substantial overall due to the non-foil clasp and solid links. It's going to be a winner.

Here's my old 114270 on 7.5" wrist:

^^^ the bezel and case seem a lot more substantial on the new 36mm.

Look at the distance from the edge of the dial to where the crown starts.

That’s a lot of space.

I don’t think I like this watch.

I think it'll be a winner. Here's my old exp next to my wife's DJ36. I never could quite wrap my head around/comfortably wear the DJ36 shorter lugs and the new Explorer seems to be a tad beefier while maintaining the longer lugs, which give the larger perceived size; much like a longines heritage diver.

Very similar to the 214270. Bezel is wide.
I would prefer the 114270 myself over this.
Even the 5 digit 14270.

I think your (three) testimony makes me more avid to pursue the new version... could be my 7.5” wrist in this case.

As far as no getting scammed. The “trusted” bloody sellers still the post the five or six digit at the prevailing price. I’m almost as a point where vetting a seller is better than papers for price point/negotiations

Looking at both pics, the 114270 does look nicer to me.

What do you think is the best source to avoid getting scammed? hqmilton?
I’d go NOS out of the EU if I were you, and then just send it to Rolex for a service.

I could see myself trying the new 36mm at some point. Hoping these aren’t going to be that popular in all honesty.

Supposed new Rolex line up...

Post by matt.wu » Sun Apr 11, 2021 11:58 am

For me, if you’ve wanted a 36mm explorer-style watch without the old stamped bracelet, you’ve always had the option of the 116000, which has been underpriced forever. My wife has had this one for 7+ years, and it’s still within the same realm in terms of pricing.

I had the older air king version of this one for awhile. The blue is very nice.

Are the 369 lumed? That's and the better bracelet are the only things I like about the newer Explorer 1s.
