New Seamaster 300

Post by djh1201 » Tue Mar 23, 2021 5:46 am

Thoughts? Think this one looks hot, for the most part I like pretty much all of the changes. Love the new dial construction, as well as the slight increase in dial diameter, slimmer case, etc.

I love this watch so much. Only complaints are 13.85 thick it's on the cusp of "chunky" but wow I love the sandwich

Thinner case, single-line sandwich dial, lollipop, and lumed aluminum insert. Winner winner.

Looks like they are making it in bronze as well.

I really like the lollipop seconds hand - I remember thinking it was pretty cool back when they put it on the James Bond Spectre LE. Very nice design overall.

Agreed on all counts! Might have to be my 1st Omega. Torn between this and the White Seamaster 42.

I like it a lot.... would prefer it to be a little thinner. Omega can't seem to get the Coax movement thickness down. Didn't these wear awkward due to lug to lug length?

This design would be perfect at a BB58 size. Omega is missing out on having no divers for people that like slim 40mm or less watches.

I love the more open cleaner dial, overall a looker but preferred the old second hand and crown. This crown is out of place on this watch for me. I also wished for a slimmer caseback.

I'm pretty sure I've read that the coax movements themselves aren't all that thick, so the case thickness appears to be strictly a design choice for some reason. In this instance, I'm sure the sandwich dial adds to it.

Some of it is design choice for sure, but at least the 8500 wasn't a thin movement:
Omega Cal 8500/8501: 29mm diameter 5.5mm thickness (5.6mm for Cal 8501)
Omega Cal 1120: 25.6mm diameter 4mm thickness
Omega Cal 2500: 25.6 diameter 4.1mm thickness
Omega Cal 1164 (ETA 7750): 30mm diameter 7.9mm thickness

Of course, Rolex managed to stuff an even thicker movement into the fairly thin 14060M
Rolex Cal 3135: 28mm diameter 6mm thickness

and Daytona
Rolex Cal 4130: 30.5mm diameter 6.5mm thickness

I like it a lot minus going back to aluminum bezel. I understand it's a neo-vintage move but there was nothing wrong with liquid metal bezel and it was scratchproof. With a typical Omega discount this should compete well with BB58, which was probably what it was built for.

Kind of less bling for your buck, though I think Omega's matte ceramic bezels looked cool. It's a brushed case and bracelet away from being a great daily.

Agree matte ceramic from PO would have been great. I’m guessing it was easier to use aluminum in making lumed bezel? Not sure. Aluminum as charming and nostalgic as it is belongs in less expensive watches IMO. For 6K MSRP that’s just lazy, although this will be circulating for $3500 on secondary all day long

The BB58 movement is 4.99 mm thick, so not too much thinner than the newer Omega movements. Seems like Omega should be able to slim down their cases a bit.

It's pretty clearly being driven by the bulging case back. Basically every Omega diver has a back that bulges as much, or more than, a Rolex SD.

The BB58 (left) doesn't have a particularly thin mid case, but the back is almost flat. If you fit the bulging Omega style back it would immediately be a chunky watch.

The Daytona is particularly interesting, because the watch itself is pretty thin. Of course, only 100 meters WR.

Have you ever tried on a SS Daytona? It wears wonderfully. I think I paid, at the time for me, the astronomical price of $10,000 for mine and I have never once regretted it. It's the perfect watch for someone who likes smaller watches.

In real world use, 13.8mm thickness isn't too bad on a 41mm watch. Some of the thick boys Omega was making before were 7750 movements in 41/42mm cases. Those were like 17mm thick.

(and I still like them)

These look like a nice iteration on the SM300.

I’d be happy with 13.8. Just used the calipers on my 8500 PO and, including crystal, it’s 16mm. That hasn’t bothered me, it’s my favorite watch to wear. The balance is good enough that it’s not top heavy.

Looks great but won't be spending 6 grand. Will make do with something like an 007 mod for now.

Really is a stunner David, and the way they updated so many things
without changing the personality at all is just really terrific. :salute: :)
Omega seems to be doing so many cool things lately. Can't thank
you enough for the report !!!

P.S. This Bronze Gold looks to be this one's brother...
