Good article and I agree with his sentiments 100%. When it comes to dive watches, simple and robust is best.

Fantastic article, well written and a great read. Watch manufacturers need to read this article and focus on what is really important in a good dive watch.

Good comments Jason.

IMO most dive watch reviews are lame. If a car reviewer commented about how comfortable a car's seats were, how good looking the car was, that the engine turned over, sounded good, and seemed to run well when the key was turned...but hadn't driven it? That is what many dive watch reviews seem like to me.

I may in the minority here, but I don't think you can review equipment you didn't really use. A car review of a vehicle you didn't drive is a waste of time. A review of a dive watch you didn't dive is the same, IMO.

I don’t agree entirely. I do agree that you shouldn’t review a dive watch from the perspective of a diver if you don’t dive with it. So stuff like ease of bezel performance while underwater, confirmation of water resistance, underwater legibility, etc. are pretty meaningless.

But tons of folks who don’t dive buy dive watches. So I think it’s fair to review them on that basis. Aesthetics, comfort, reliability, general legibility, etc.

agreed.

the car analogy would be more like buying a high performance car and reviewing it as a daily driver instead of on the track. still totally legit as long as you don't review the track performance qualities without taking it out on a track.

Great read. The Keep It Simple, Stupid rule is a must for dive watches!

I do think that ruggedness needs to be considered with divers too. How many times have you banged a watch on the ladder climbing back after a dive in choppy conditions, or accidentally hit something underwater in a current?

Thanks for the write up - looking forward to more!

"In Red Wing, a woman pointed to the Union Jack flag decal on Giles’s fender and asked, “is that a Confederate flag?” This led to a long conversation about the current state of our country, race relations, and what it’s like to be a black woman in a small midwestern town. The width of the truck ensured safe social distance."

For all of the attention the gear gets, I often forget what a good writer he is. And then I am reminded.
