i'm trying to see if my InReach can still send messages. I'm assuming not. If so, that's pretty significant for people who have come to rely on the emergency capabilities ...

I didn’t know this but they are big in a aviation and maritime business.

Re: How about this Garmin BS
details are fuzzy, but it’s also impacting their aviation/gps/faa stuff. That’s got to be the real bitch

I like this version better. It’s simpler and better stated.

I suspect it’s only server based stuff that is locked up, isn’t the in-reach just a satellite communicator?jeckyll wrote:OK, InReach still works...

Never know. If they don’t have proper segmentation and IPS/IDS, they could be royally fucked. Satcom can be taken out quite easily, if there is an unprotected vector.
I wonder who hosts their shit? Gotta be one of the big boys...AWS, etc. can’t wait to see factual details of what happened. Could have huge implications for the future. Imagine if you have a hearing aid or a pacer with BLE connectivity. This could totally backdoor in

I have three Garmin watches and a bunch of Garmin stuff at work we use for various navigation requirements. This could be a nightmare for the military if it doesn’t get cleaned up soon.

Yeah, this ransomware crap is all fun and games until it impacts the safety of mariners, pilots, etc.
I’ve got charts, a compass, a protractor, divider, and parallel ruler, but I really would not want to have to rely on those alone for any great trip.
When did this happen, btw? My Garmin chart plotter worked fine yesterday.

My InReach seems to be working fine. Interesting development.
Re: How about this Garmin BS
A chart, dividers and a weems plotter. Then radar VRM’s and EBL’s and you can go anywhere. I don’t use garmin at work but this could have a big impact.Ryeguy wrote:Ah, come on! Go old school like Boy Scouts

I always think of those tools as for maritime navigation, but I was surprised to realize how commonly they were used in commercial aviation until relatively recently.Captdave wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 9:27 pmA chart, dividers and a weems plotter. I was at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum a while back with my son (the museum is on Ford Island. If you get the chance, it is a great place to spend an afternoon) and got to talking with the curator for their C-47 / DC-3.
The curator was mentioning that in the '40's and '50's all flights to Hawaii were done overnight so the flight navigator could use the stars for navigation (that is what that little domed window on the top of those vintage aircraft is for - the window is called an "astrodome"). It took about 8 hours to fly from CA to HA and the distance (2,600 miles) was pretty close to the limit for those aircraft, so there wasn't much room for navigation error.
It is kind of amazing to realize that we are only about 1 generation removed from relying on sextants and protractors for navigation.

Re: How about this Garmin BS
So should I *not* be using my watch or apps? I admit I didn't read the article but it's not clear if there is risk to personal information/devices (including phones running Garmin apps). Thx.

Would definitely be interesting to see how the past 100 years will be viewed in the "big scheme of humankind" a thousand years from now.... assuming we don't blow ourselves up before then. So much of our day to day technology evolved slowly for thousands of years until the 20th century when everything changed rapidly due to the computer age.

Totally Tim !
Honestly hadn't even heard about this by the way. So thanks so much !!!

Tim, is that a Tactix Delta Solar by chance? If so, how’s the clarity of the Power Sapphire glass?

Thanks Tim
