AP 15500?

Post by goaliechris » Sat Jul 11, 2020 5:09 pm

Will it ever be possible to get one of these through a dealer without being a massive, big swingin’, client? Asking for a friend...

Guessing the answer is, “Zero chance”.

Are they that hard to get? I see that sellers are asking well over MSRP for used 15500s so I guess they are.

Looks like things have changed dramatically since I bought my 15400 about 4 years ago. I had no issues getting one from an AD at the time. And prices for the 15400 have gone nuts since then too.

The AP and PP markets are out of control.

Indeed, they are out of control. I should have bought a 15400 a couple of years ago.

True that. Sold my SS AP RO 15400 last year for a stupid profit and now have an Smurf on order - never thought that’d be possible. For me, I would look for an AD in a small market and see if you can build a personal connection with a sales person or get a referral from a high roller to an AD.

You may be hard-pressed to find one as AP has been rapidly culling dealers from it's AD network in favor of it's own boutiques. All of the Bay Area ADs that existed when I bought my RO have lost the brand. The closest dealer to me now is the boutique in Beverly Hills - about 300 miles away.

I'm "thinking" about just the opposite - selling my Hulk and trying to move into an AP
maybe a Blue Themes, I really don't know, it's just a thought right now

Chris, good luck in your search

Thanks - it’s an expensive one! Sitting here enjoying wearing my Cameron Deepsea which I would want to sell to fund the AP. But then I’m still, 15k+ short? Wow.

I see Chrono24 has quite a few new ones from a “Verified Dealer” on the East Coast.

It doesn't appear that any of those sellers are ADs. And they're all selling at well above MSRP.

The entire market has gone insane the past few years.
Don't get me wrong there's always been strong secondary on Rolex, AP etc
BUT
With so many truly shutting ADs and going to Boutiques its truly gotten out of control.
Omega, look at the Snoopy, White Snoopy, Alaska, Ultraman etc. All have gone up nicely
Rolex most any SS Sports model, especially Kermit, Batman and Daytona.
AP RO and ROO. The older ROO LEs (a few) are not fairing that well with the new ROO's but overall still strong. The rest of APs lines are horrid sellers though.
Someday people wont care about watches as much and then prices will come down LOL

This kind of thread really makes me want to get out of this hobby. I'm so over paying silly money for steel watches.

Some APs are way overpriced, others remain reasonable (for AP). The diver and some of the offshore models. But the standard royals oaks of all flavors are going for a ton on the second hand market. And the PP nautilus and aquanaut are just going for silly money.

And Rolex is ridiculous, too.

Prices are making the hobby easy for me. Anything I’d really want is way too much for me. Makes me a de facto bystander.

The diver is relatively reasonable. It's a beautiful watch, I hope to be fortunate enough to pick one up one day.

Agree and hence I have not bought anything in over a year.

It is a really nice looking watch. This time of year, a good chunky diver on a rubber strap is very appealing.

I really like the AP diver but have never tried one on. I think about trading the 126660 for that one and I am not sure I could pull the trigger. I like the bracelet a lot and the dial is fun to look at.

Damn. That's saying something.

I am in the same boat. I occasionally get the itch for something new and shiny, and then when I see the prices of what I want, I quickly recoil and think of what better use I can make of the funds. It's been working well for a year or two now.

One watch to consider if you have the funds and don't want to pay the crazy AP or PP prices might be the Vacheron Constantin overseas three hander. You can get them preowned in SS for $16,000 or so and you get that cool easy strap change system. They come with a bracelet, leather strap, and rubber strap. I'm pretty sure 100m water resistance, too.

Too rich for my blood, but if I had the money I'd probably look there as a more reasonably priced alternative.

VC is GREAT! I have gotten 7 various models for a client and they are his main brand now.
His daily is the 41 mm blue dial date.
He sold his AP to a friend and hasn't missed it.
The Overseas line wears like the RO, the bracelet I think looks better and the bezel isn't as much of a ding magnet.
You can't go wrong with either to be honest!

I love the VC Overseas. The latest gen chronograph with the blue dial has been on my wish list since it first came out. One day...

I'd like to pick up an offshore one day. The one I want is way out of my reach but at least the prices for it on the grey/secondary seem normal when compared to the MSRP (it's actually lower!) might have to actually sell something from the collection too :(
