Seiko re-connect...

Post by JDC222 » Wed Apr 22, 2020 7:48 pm

My buddy Tony, who lives at Hastings Point, NSW Australia sent me a pic today, of his 6309-7040.

Let me back up, I went to Australia in 1989 and lived there, mostly with Tony and his wife for 1 year. He taught me how to surf, for me a job and we have stayed in touch since. He was to come and stay with me this summer, but CoVid got in the way.

He said he’s had the 6309 since he was 18 and he’s 57 now. I love the fact that he’s surfed with it almost everyday and beat the crap out it...never serviced!

He’s not a “watch guy” but saw a few of my watches on Instagram and sent me pics today;

So nice.

My father in law bought a brand new 6309 when on base in the navy. Never serviced but about 3-4 years ago it started running like shit.
I tried to convince him to get it serviced and I’d send it and take care of it, but he said he doesn’t trust anyone and they’ll prob swap out the original parts

So he now wears some cheap quartz from Walmart.

Cool story and 6309. Love to see and hear the stories on these vintage divers.

That is awesome. I love the fact that this watch has been there with him for so long.

Love this story.

I am beginning to go back to the 80s when the 6309 was a “one watch”. I got mine originally then and it’s never been serviced or opened. Runs like it did the day I got it. Been around the world with me, survived college and been on every dive I have ever done.

When unopened.... the patina is slight and still mostly white!

I think when the patina is there because _you_ put it there, and every mark on the watch is related to an experience, whether an 'oops' or a wipeout or whatever it was, it's a whole lot different than just buying a watch that someone else had that with and put the marks there. It's meaningful vs. just being a look

Have to agree 100% too with Bjorn, and Bill here above Dave !! :) :) Nowadays watch
companies are making watches look like this, and your friend did it the old fashioned
way, and for free. It really s such a neat story, and holy cow, the not servicing thing
is incredible as well. ..Thanks so very much for telling us about this !

Dave that is a killer story. Sounds like he is a good dude. Let me know if want it back in top running shape and we can get it there without ruining it.

I like making patina.

I got my 6309 in 1989
Had it checked a few times by seiko and the last time they said do not dive with it
I think it was to do with threads and the crown not something that could be fixed
Still love it though
