In case anyone's interested about honey bee swarming.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swarming_(honey_bee)

Generally a good thing - it means more bees, which means more pollination and more honey.
yep
Are they docile enough that you can basically just put them in the box like that?
Yes. I brushed them into a bucket and then dumped them into this box. Honey bees do not go out of their way to sting people. But they are super curious, so it is not uncommon for them to land on you or buzz around your head to check you out. The only time I get stung is when I am working directly in the hive and they are trying to protect their queen.
Makes sense since sting = death for a honey bee. Defense of last resort. Unlike wasps - those fuckers.
wasp and yellow jackets are demon spawns imo :monkeypiss:

i've wanted to do a hive for a while. but i may have to put that on hold for a while longer. Dany absolutely *LOVES* to try to eat bugs flying in the air around her. she chases them and tries to snatch them in mid air. pretty sure that would be a bad mix with a hive in the yard.

Out of hundreds or thousands of bees, how do they know when a new queen is born?

the old queen lays the new queen eggs. the queens put off pheromones. that is what attracts them to each other.

Making a lot of bagels. Eating a lot of bagels. Both fun activities to do with the daughter. We decided we didn't care about the aesthetics for this batch.

My mother in law made taralli, which I think are boiled and baked like bagels. They're delicious.

My wife just suggested to my 10 year old son that we build a treehouse.

So much for me spending the summer lounging and enjoying my new hammock.... It’ll be a fun project, but damn, she just dropped that project idea out of the complete blue.

Did one years ago with my son and daughter (my dad pitched in too). It was so much fun and the kids used it even in HS with their friends haha. Sadly; the 100 year oak lost a battle and ended up not making it. The years under the canopy, priceless! Enjoy!!!!

So, those of you with kids who live in bigger cities probably know it’s necessary to secure summer camp slots by March/April at latest. Which we did, prepaid of course. Then lockdown happened. Summer camp cancelled. Bitch-ass company says “cheerio moms and dads, guess what we can’t refund your money” and files Chapter 11. We’re out a serious wad of cash. :cussing: One of the parents filed a class action lawsuit. It’s time to file a credit card dispute. :banghead: I guess we are lucky we didn’t put aside pretax dependent care funds for the summer. :htfu:

They're not really all that hard. Most difficult thing about them right now is finding bread flour and yeast.
Here is the recipe I use, and I know many people who actually know something about baking swear by this one:

By the way, I'm pretty embarrassed at the way those bagels look. If you exert any effort, they can look a lot better. But the taste is awesome. I highly recommend the Trader Joe's everything bagel seasoning mix for these.

totally is.

i make avocado toast occasionally and liberally shake that into the avocado. so many good things you can do with it. including adding it to everything bagels that don't have enough everything on them.

Well I thought these looked good and decided to try it for myself. So me and my 10 year old daughter became bagel bakers this afternoon. Not great looking but tasty. Thanks for the recipe.
