Major WTF Spring Drive

Post by TIMUR » Wed Jan 08, 2020 4:41 pm

Was flying between time zones this morning - unscrewed the crown, reset time, pushed crown back in —- hands started moving at 3-4 times normal speed !! What the hell??

Pulled the crown / pushed back in — back to normal.

Here is a video next to a regular stopwatch.

Has anybody ever experienced this? Any idea what the hell happened??

I never heard of that. I wonder if it has something to do with the magnetic brake that acts on the glide wheel 8 times a second to modulate the second hand’s speed. If the integrated circuit that converts the quartz signal into the magnet controlled brake went bad, or if the glide wheel got magnetized, it might give this result. The unfortunate part for you is it will have to go back to Japan for repairs. Although, as new as it is, the dealer should just take a return and replace it for you. Sorry to hear this for sure

My spring drive GS Diver was serviced at the Mahwah, NJ service center under warranty. Joe Kirk told me they have a dedicated technician for GS now, who presumably does the spring drive repairs.

Edit: I asked Joe one time about mine running off, and if the movement can get magnetized. He said not really, and that you have to wait for it to run at least a minute after winding it before setting the time, to give the brake a chance to adjust.

Whoa! No clue how it could happen, but interested to hear why once you get it figured out.

Here is what can and can't be serviced here

Here is part 2. Really shows the speed

https://vimeo.com/383682980

It’s running great now. I fucking love this watch - don’t want to send it in after 2 weeks of ownership. Will keep an eye on it..

Got it from Topper

I had my other spring drive serviced at jersey. It was a shit show.

Certainly sounds legitimate. Perhaps this brake also is what stops the hands when you pull out the crown to hack it, and it got stuck out of position when pushing the crown back in.

Is it a new watch? Maybe just watch it for a bit to see if it happens again?

I’ve told you mFs multiple times- you need to unscrew your crown and fly backward over time zones and it fixes the problems.

Has all to do with Bermuda Triangle, flase flag operation and Ukraine.

Happened to be in SFO, stopped by Topper to see Rob. Turns out the latest SD watches come with a remote to adjust oscillation. He forgot to to pack with the watch.
All better now.
