Is non screw down crown a deal breaker for people?

Post by Cowboy » Wed Oct 16, 2019 5:38 pm

I am pretty much limited these days to pool water (living in AZ that's 250 days a year) but no more scuba. Still I pause before any diver that is non screw down crown. I know it makes no sense, any more than preferring 100m to 200m and 300m to 200m (won't kill the deal....but).

Any others feel this way? Do you know is it that expensive to use/add a screwdown tube and crown?

I always prefer a screw to a non-screw.

I used to till I bought a pilot watch that was 100m wr and non screw down crown. I have worn it swimming snorkeling and in the shower with no issues. That said I still think a screw down crown is a nice feature and most dive watches tend to come with them. It is just not a show stopper for me anymore. More choices now is the only down side.

As long as the watch has the appropriate level of water resistance then I don't care how it's implemented. There are many iconic dive watches that do not have screw-down crowns.

I had a Fortis b42 non screw. 200m rating and no issues. Great watch. Image

The only non-screw down crown I like is on a Panerai.

I prefer a screw down, but I agree that if the watch has the appropriate water resistance, it shouldn't make a difference as long as you have it tested from time to time (which is the same whether the watch has a screw down or not). People who argue that 50m or 100m of water resistance really means that you shouldn't even think about water when you're wearing a watch have no idea what they're talking about.

Not a deal breaker for sure.
I’ve swam with non screw down crowns before with my JR and B&R for example. Never had an issue with proper WR watches.

For me it has more to do with my personal habits/likes than water resistance. I habitually wind all of my watches 1-2 times a week. And I like the action of having to unscrew the crown, the winding and setting or resetting of the date and time, and then screwing the crown back down into place before putting it hack in the watch box.

i'd probably prefer to *dive* with a screw down, but anything else, i'm not all that worried about it.
