New Swiss/US movement ***Atelier Caliber 1***

Post by spring-diver » Tue Oct 15, 2019 3:31 pm

Apparently as of December 31 2019, ETA will no longer supply movements to 3rd parties.

Hopefully this will be a great alternative to the 2824 or 2892-A2Image

It’ll be available in 3 grades and finishes. Small second & GMT movements will be available in the near future

I hope this is successful. It would be good to have some competition to encourage high quality and reasonable pricing.

Swatch people must be drunk. It seems like a very unprofessionally run company.
They already decided to stop supplying ETA what, a couple years ago?
Then backtracked in such spectacular fashion that you could find 2824 elabore grade in $300 micros lately.
Now they are going back to "no supply" again?

It’s Hager Watches.
The same brand who does the Tudor Clone.

I don’t know why, but I have a feeling this is a Chinese movement that’s just being disguised as a Swiss/American caliber

Agreed. I do not see how this one even be possible. That is unless they have HUGE pockets of cash and skills.

more info:
It started with an idea several years ago. A U.S. and a Swiss company decided to establish a partnership to collaborate on the revival of American watchmaking through training, assembly and the production of parts and automatic movements. The result – Atelier.

One of the objectives of the U.S.- Swiss alliance that led to the creation of Atelier was to develop an 11 1⁄2 caliber suitable for the volume market in the U.S. The result is the Caliber 1. Caliber 1 is not a clone of a pre-existing caliber, it is a drop-in replacement for popular calibers brands currently use.

The Caliber 1 has been in development for the past four years with U.S. involvement for three of those four years. Atelier’s Swiss technology partner is one of the few manufacturers in the Swiss watch industry that has achieved horological independence with the internal production and manufacture of hairsprings and the escapement. Everything is made in- house, except for the jewels, barrel springs and shock-absorbers with all parts made to the highest industry standard.

The Caliber 1 is a robust movement that is Chronofiable® Certified with a transversal balance bridge. This allows for stable and precise positioning of the oscillator. The bridge’s rigidity greatly improves shock resistance. The Caliber 1 has a diameter of 25.60mm and a height of 4.60mm, 28,800 vibrations per hour / 4 [Hz], with a power reserve of 44 hours.

Atelier will initially supply Swiss Made movements to brands beginning January 2020. Thereafter, the company will begin assembly and production of small parts and will offer three levels of assembly; Swiss Made, Assembled in the USA, or Made in the USA from domestic and Swiss parts. In the future, Atelier will offer a variety of calibers that will fit the vision of any brand or designer including small seconds, and GMT.

Any idea what this means? "it is a drop-in replacement for popular calibers brands currently use." There is no ones size fits all. And there is a ton of popular calibers being used, not just one.

I’m guessing their goal is to fill the ETA 2824 shortage?

That’s probably their standard R12 (+/-12s/day) movement.

I’m curious on their COSC R4 (+/-4s/day) pricing

I would label it as such. You are probably right.

That's my guess as well.

I also have no idea what "Chronofiable Certified" means.

Sounds like marketing speak to make people think it’s chronometer certified capable? I’ve never heard that term.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking - "we could have this certified as a chronometer if we wanted to." Which I assume is true for any movement that meets COSC specs, regardless of what it's called. And COSC is already sort of an industry created fiction, so this just piles onto that.

This was my thought. Not being a Swiss movement I don’t think they could qualify for a COSC certificate anyway so this might be how they can use a similar label for marketing purposes for their more accurately tuned movements.

Sounds pretty great honestly, and hope that they are successful as well.
Always thought there should be a ton of movement companies out there.
But there are so few. It's amazing when you think about it.

So this is cool Shannon ! 8-) Thanks so much for the heads up !!!
