Gas Gas Bones has quit or at least slowed down production

Post by toxicavenger » Tue Oct 08, 2019 7:47 am

https://www.gasgasbones.com/read-me
Welcome to GasGasBones 'lite'
I have retired from a life of strapping! sort of....
After over 15 years of making straps and over 6 years doing it full time, I have decided I need a break from doing GGB full time!

GasGasBones has been good to me and has kept me in bread ( and more) over these past years. However, Im just not fulfilled. The job doesn't challenge me anymore. I have taken GGB as far as I can as a one man band and simply havent got time or the inclination to do any more. I have made literally thousands of straps over the years and to put it bluntly, its *&^%ing boring.

I have felt this more over the past couple of years especially and thought more and more about taking a break from it full time and to throttle it right back, almost to zero !

Also, something which is possibly more important. People that work from home by themselves all day may well understand more. Working in a shed at the bottom of the garden is somewhat isolating ! I rarely interact with people through the day and being a social sort of chap find the lonely existence of a shed dweller is sending me crazy! I have well passed the cabin fever stage :-) I dont think it does anyone any good to be isolated for too long, certainly not me !

So what now. Well Ive got myself a job, a proper job, with lots of people there! I will be able to interact with real humans throughout the working day for the first time in 6 years! :-) A change is as good as a rest apparently so I'm looking forward to it as its totally 'off piste' to what I have done before. So with GGB pretty much shut, or at least only doing a couple of straps and other work when I want to, that will also now give me time to do some fun projects for myself that I have had in mind for ages but haven't had much time to do. GGB HQ will now become a pretty cool hobby room and I look forward to getting stuck in on fun projects for myself !

I WILL STILL MAKE A FEW BITS 'N' PIECES

I'm not disappearing completely. Although the full fat gasgasbones.com website is shut down ( its 'on hold' just in case it goes shitstorm) I will be able to make a few bits and pieces from time to time through these pages. Things I am willing to make are here in the 'straps' and 'other stuff' I will also still be around on instagram, and a little on twitter and FB were its always nice to chat and converse with you lovely people, so please do stick around on social :-)

THANK YOU

Over the time as GGB I have made many friends through this weird hobby of ours. You guys that have bought straps and other things for me have literally but bread on the table for me and my family. I cannot thank you enough for the support over the years, for putting up with my stupid opening schedules and long lead times. Thank you for supporting me on Twitter, FaceBook and Instagram. Thank you to everyone that has recommended me to others on forums & tagged me in on pictures on social media etc.

Im sending you all a virtual big Bonsie bear hug.

See you around xx

Good for him. As someone who has thought of making a career change several times, I wish him luck.

He seems like a great guy. Sorry I never got a strap from him.

Sounds like it was a really tough decision, and one that makes you both
sad, and happy at the same time.

What's nice too is he is still evidently going to be tinkering around, but
more as just a hobby. Definitely am wishing him all the best in what
he is dong now, and have to thank him for making this hobby that much
more awesome for everyone ! :headbang: :salute:

Thanks very much for the news Terry.

Good for Carl. I've dealt with him several times and always a pleasant experience. Wish him all the best.

Bummer news for sure. I've owned a few of his straps, and he's made me straps for all my Oris watches over the years. Gonna miss him.

He's a great guy in my experience. I could see how cranking out straps for years on end would leave me unfulfilled and wanting something more. Best of luck to him.

Just got word that he will still do the SPV1 and the Oris style straps. :)

i totally get the "stuck in a cabin by myself" kind of thing. i don't mind working from home occasionally, but i'd really miss the coworker interaction.

I'm glad I emailed him when I did asking if he could squeeze-in a moon landing lunar placard replica. He obliged and even tossed-in a mini 4" version as a surprise. Carl is a class act and I wish him the best.

It would be cool if he occasionally offered some new LE space/Speedmaster stuff from time to time just for creative license and pocket change.

Home/vehicle is my office now as a third party regulatory inspector for a major safety company. Went from managing a crew of 65 to just myself these last 3yrs. It has it's perks for sure (like maybe seeing my boss once every 18months) but isolation is a big con. Plus being the inspector makes it that much harder as I'm the least loved guy in a facility ... It's like being a traffic cop without a partner or precinct except my life isn't at stake. I miss the banter and will likely get back into a kitchen once my kid is older to understand.

I had intentions on getting one of his straps in the future for my Bremont.

I commend him and really wish him the best.
It's a beautiful world! Gerald.

What Carl needs to do is just build what he wants, when he wants in very limited quantities, much like Peter Atwood of planet pocket tool has been doing for years.

He clearly doesn’t want out of the game entirely, so doing it in Atwood’s fashion gives him tons of options for exclusivity on special projects and demand.

Peter does it right. His demand is so incredibly high there’s apps and services to let you know when he has something for sale and you have seconds or minutes to get one. But his prices only go up based on work involved and incidentals, not so much on demand. Whatever he posts sells in a NY second, and whatever else is sold on eBay at 30-50% increase.

It's a shame he is stopping the straps but great that he will still be doing stuff. I feel very lucky that he build my commissioned piece, I also have one of his straps and hoping he will still find time to finish another piece I have asked for ImageImage

Good for Carl. I guess I'd better order one before I lose this chance. Kind of like buying a Drew strap or one of Art's straps.

Jesus that was fast... I can see taking a couple months off and maybe going on a trip. Some people just have to stay busy.

He quickly figured out what the most of us already know. Interacting with other people on a day to day basis isn't all it's cracked up to be.
