The fact that these cases, bezels, crystals, crowns, and movements are all available from Crystal Times does seem to make his “own watch brand” a bit easier to do. Maybe he’s making his own stuff, but I doubt it. Design your own dial, assemble, sell, enjoy profit. Seems pretty straightforward.
I suspect it's part of the process, both as a test and a learning opportunity, on the way to producing more of a unique model down the road. It's a good way to test the water before you make big mistakes or overcommit to a certain business model. If this makes LIW a lot of money then we'll probably see more daring designs and more proprietary parts down the road.
Both Dagaz and MK II started as Seiko mod shops. Two data points that seem to cancel each other out.
Yes - and I don’t have any issue with this guy doing it either.
I’ve actually been considering buying the case, etc from Crystal Times and having a custom piece made, so this makes the process easier. I just wish he did a nice no-date.

I’ll do the same. I’ve got a bunch of leftovers from my mods and this is a great deal. I want to do a 007 version of my 013’s

I think that’s great, although I’m already over ceramic bezels - too shiny for me
I wish him well

I like the old-school aluminum bezel inserts. I actually like the way they weather and age.

Generally I do too. I don’t have anything against the ceramic flavor, just don’t like how blingy they are. It’s like a wearing a mirror lol

Replacement inserts are cheap as hell. Endless options available, too.

I have never been a fan of the shiny ceramic bezels. I've always considered having my 114060 bezel blasted (Like Wu's Mod), but never did it.

Yeah - I’ve seen that (Matt has all the cool toys)
Wonder if there are any watches that come with a blasted ceramic bezel. I think I’ve seen some matte examples

I have a loner Helm Komodo that I think had a blasted insert. Now that I think of it I am not sure it is ceramic.
Either way I totally dislike ceramic inserts. Way to fragile for a daily wearer for me.

Seems like a winner for the SKX crowd. I do applaud him for keeping his logo simple and not crowding the dial with unnecessary text! The price point is really nice as well.

It seems to me that the watch is larger then an SKX and the dial probably not compatible with the usual aftermarket Seiko dials. The rest I assume is not compatible either with the SKX parts. It seems actually that maybe he used the base model that Deep Blue watches has used in the past for a similar watch.

I’m pretty sure it is compatible with all SKX parts, both OEM and aftermarket.

I don't understand what makes this very direct copy compelling...
I am thinking the same if I want a watch that looks like a Seiko why not just buy a Seiko ?

That particular line of Seiko watches (ref. SKX***) has been discontinued.

Yep.
My skywalker as well.
I swore off ceramic in general after my SD4K but the matte or lightly subdued versions brought me back.

I guess if this business model is good enough for Bill Yao, Eyal Lalo and Gunther Whathisname at Steinhart, it's good enough for Marc at Island.
Hell, that guy at Deep Blue has been selling SKX knock offs (the "NATO Diver"!) for years.
The only good thing about Deep Blue which worked for me was that it’s 44mm. I like the larger size of Turtle but I like the case shape of SKX. So it’s kind of a hybrid that I wanted.
Clearly it’s SKX knock off yet it has better Seiko hacking movement and sapphire crystal and nice PVD job.
