Going Quartz, Never Thought It Would Happen
Going Quartz, Never Thought It Would Happen
During my roughly 25 years of being watch obsessed, I had pretty much eschewed anything that had a quartz movement. Something about that stop/start second hand turned me off; and I had a snob viewpoint that auto movements were the only real watches (and don’t even get me started on digital readouts).
Yet over the past few months, I’ve added 3 new watches, and they all have quartz movements. I’ve started to fall into the grab ‘n go routine, and none of these offend my highly developed sense of watch aesthetics: An Omega X-33, a Farer Chronograph, and an Ares Diver-1.
Anyone else gone over to the dark side?

Waiting on a new Scurfa quartz today, I also have a Sinn UX and a swiss army Quartz diver. I like both quartz and auto and wear both.

It's interesting how things, or views on things like this can change right Michael?!
Although have been going for mostly automatic, and hand winders in recent years.
Many of my watches are still quartz, and I wear them all the time too !

Re: Going Quartz, Never Thought It Would Happen
I have a couple 90's styled ones for grab and go. A Tag and a Zodiac.
Re: Going Quartz, Never Thought It Would Happen
A little over a year ago I only had autos. Now 50% of my rotation is quartz and I have been a convert to the convenience of grab-n-go. I think it's important to remember that not all quartz are created equal and there is a place for the rugged nature of the movement (I spend a fair amount of time outdoors recreating )

Loves me a good grab-n-go!
Re: Going Quartz, Never Thought It Would Happen
A few years ago I would have never even considered a quartz watch. Then I bought my first vintage quartz diver and I was hooked. Figuring that I had plenty of mechanicals - I thought why not? Other than the minor hassle of replacing batteries, there are some advantages. Vintage quartz models are generally less expensive than their mechanical counterparts, and there's the "grab-n-go" factor that Mike mentions. Plus when the technology was still somewhat of a novelty in the early-mid 1970's, a lot of cool designs were produced. In fact, back then, a quartz diver was often more expensive new than it's mechanical counterpart. One of my favorites...

Good to have at least one in the box; I have two; and a G-Shock.

Picked this up recently, 40mm, super thin and readable, tired of re-setting all the autos on the winder to my atomic G- shocks, but will still pick up maybe a lower-mid level soon, like an Oris or Fortis, most of my "collection" now is cheaper quartz anyway!

I have never left the dark side. I have owned a ton of Seiko 7548s to scratch the itch. Now it is Scurfa's, Grand Seiko and Casio.

That is a great looking Scurfa!
I always have one or two eco-drive or seiko solars around. Have an Omega hummer (tuning fork movement) and planning to add an Ares later this year. Good to have at least one quartz and one G shock around.

Omega / Tudor / Rolex / Sinn / Doxa / Seiko
Re: Going Quartz, Never Thought It Would Happen
I like both, but I only wear my Traser quartz at work and gshocks when I'm doing yard work etc. I had a UX for a few years never wore it much tho for some reason
Re: Going Quartz, Never Thought It Would Happen
I go through phases. My autos have to be tuned very tight or I don’t want to use them. All new purchases have been quartz over the last year and I don’t see that changing. I’ve gotten regulating Seikos down well but I hate fooling with them unless I have to and I can’t afford to have a watch gaining 30 seconds a day while trying to get it right with the way my job is about watch accuracy. I’m a bit spoiled by solar/atomic watches, but most auto and standard quartz look better to me. At least all these things mean it takes a long time to actually decide to spend money on a new watch.
Re: Going Quartz, Never Thought It Would Happen
I've tried to wear quartz watches. Most recently, a nice Tuna. They are just not for me.

3 of my 12 are quartz or solar. They definitely have their uses for me.

I’m a fan of quartz and currently have three. Just so easy to pick up and go.

Yep, great grab and go for me. I’m a sucker for a good tuna.

Haven’t you owned about 15 of them?smalls wrote:Yep, great grab and go for me. I’m a sucker for a good tuna.

Re: Going Quartz, Never Thought It Would Happen
Yep. Nothing wrong with one or more quality quartz in the rotation, and I say that wearing my 3570.50 in recognition of Apollo 11. I'll likely grab a quartz thereafter and be ready without worry.
The X33 will be a cost burden someday but the workhorse 7C46 Seiko is where it's at for longevity and ease of maintenance.
Unfortunately, both Seikos are gone but the Bulova is still here and my local buddy has had great luck with his in terms of accuracy.
Living in the CA valley actually has a benefit outside of the you can surf and ski in the same day ... The weather here essentially guarantees HAQ-like accuracy for most quality quartz watches throughout the year. The 7C46s performed within 5 seconds throughout the year no problemo, and typically require only a battery and pressure check for decades.
Should have never sold the SBBN015.

I just counted and I have 6 autos and 7 quartz watches

Re: Going Quartz, Never Thought It Would Happen
Yeah I wish I still had an SBBN015. I didn’t care as much for the 031, but maybe at some point I’ll get another 031 and just make peace with it’s the new model.
Re: Going Quartz, Never Thought It Would Happen
Love my Aerospace, set it once and it's still within ~5 seconds, and really enjoy my Ares. Also have a Garmin S60 approach (pretty much golf only wearing), and a Scurfa diver one silicon I almost never wear. No issue with some quartz in the rotation.
Find the X33 quite intriguing, though I'm trying to get away from larger (> 43mm) watches - but the L2L (48mm) and thickness (~15mm) on the X33 seems quite sane so it might be viable. Really like the Solar Impulse version w/lumed bezel, just not sure about the color scheme long term and would likely go Skywalker. Have to try them on.

Re: Going Quartz, Never Thought It Would Happen
I’m getting that way myself. If the IWC ever sells, I’m gonna be chasing something in an “upscale” quartz like an X-33 or some form of Breitling Superquartz or GS quartz. All this talk about mechanical watches having a soul where quartz doesn’t is a bit silly. By that logic, a Swatch System 51 is a better, more impressive watch than a GS 9F.
If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.
