Thought I would share this now even though it's not quite finished. I have been working on this box for a few years now on and off and its nearly finished. After messing around with various watch boxes and watch winders over the years, I wanted to bring the whole collection together in one place.
I bought the box some years ago at a time in my life when things were not so good. Quit my job, took on 2 mortgages and health was not so good so even though the box was only £30 it seemed a big thing at the time but I knew I had to grab it as it was exactly what I had in mind.
The box is an old scientific instrument box and very well made, strong enough to stand on! It took a while before I set too with building it and I have been slowly getting it to how it is now with time allowing.
First, I stripped the box of all fittings and lacquer and smoothed it all down. After planning out how I want the inside to look, I made the watch dividers from MDF. Once this was done I covered it all in fabric and trimmed the inside with red velvet.
There is enough height for 2 layers so I made 2 drop in smaller boxes, one for more watches and the other, for now, for all my straps and tools.
The box exterior was waxed with several coats and polished. I have to say, that came out a lot better than I thought. The smaller boxes were built from scratch and just need a bit more finishing off. Apart from the box itself, all the conversion work and woodwork and trimming has been done by me and I sort of learnt as I went.
I am very pleased with the results so far and all my watched are now in one place. It's a big ass box so now the next problem is where to put it!
Last jobs will be to do final trimming on the watch pillows, probably in a light grey fabric and add some hardware so the box looks like an old travel or seafaring chest.
