NASA's Deep Space Atomic Clock

Post by AtomicTom » Fri Jun 07, 2019 10:14 am

Did you guys have time to catch this?

Looks like this cool new atomic clock will be launching into space soon.
That will change space navigation to not only Mars, but into deep space
everyone.

The NASA Deep Space Atomic Clock will be, or is the most accurate
timing instrument ever made, and uses mercury-ion trap technology.
Having been developed over 20 years at the NASA Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in Pasadena.

June 22 is when the launch takes place, and it will even be live
streamed. Beginning a year long testing as it orbits the Earth.

A few details of the many details about the Deep Space Atomic
Clock include that it will lose just 1 second over 9 million years,
will help spacecraft navigate, keeps time using mercury ions, and
works similar to GPS. It's set to launch on a SpaceX Falcon heavy
Rocket too it looks like.

Some pictures for you...

Very cool, but once in space, isn't time relative?

Thanks Tom

I’ll keep an eye out for one when it hits the used market - I don’t buy new ;)

NASA should have made two so they could have auctioned off the most expensive clock ever made to pay for both. Take that Patek!
