LA and SD peeps be careful selling locally!
A couple of people on TRF have been robbed of their watch while doing a sales transaction in local jewelry stores. The thief basically asked to see the watch and then runs to a get away car.
Be safe.

This is also why I don’t do the big watch gatherings like Redbar or similar.toxicavenger wrote:A couple of people on TRF have been robbed of their watch while doing a sales transaction in local jewelry stores. The thief basically asked to see the watch and then runs to a get away car.

A $49K transaction with someone you don’t know is worth hiring a security guard. Or maybe flip the watch store owner a couple bills and ask him to close and lock the shop to other business during your sale.

I know that in some municipalities police departments will allow exchanges of valuable property on premises. Probably worth looking into if you're in this situation.

Back before redbar and the like got big, I wouldn't have given it a second thought. Now with the higher profile of watch GTG's, I think it would be just too easy to have a watch stolen. I'd go, but I'd only bring what was on my wrist and maybe one other. And at least I don't have to worry about bringing anything too expensive.matt.wu wrote: ↑Wed Apr 10, 2019 10:47 amThis is also why I don’t do the big watch gatherings like Redbar or similar.toxicavenger wrote:A couple of people on TRF have been robbed of their watch while doing a sales transaction in local jewelry stores. I always did find those watch gtg picks odd. A bunch of people just throw their expensive watches in a pile for a group of strangers.matt.wu wrote: ↑Wed Apr 10, 2019 10:47 amThis is also why I don’t do the big watch gatherings like Redbar or similar.toxicavenger wrote:A couple of people on TRF have been robbed of their watch while doing a sales transaction in local jewelry stores. Yep. I don't do public gatherings for precisely that reason. That, and I'm shy .matt.wu wrote: ↑Wed Apr 10, 2019 10:47 amThis is also why I don’t do the big watch gatherings like Redbar or similar.toxicavenger wrote:A couple of people on TRF have been robbed of their watch while doing a sales transaction in local jewelry stores. I feel bad for the victim and hope he gets his watch back (or is insured for theft), but I wouldn't walk around with a $50K watch on me period, and I certainly wouldn't hand it over to a complete stranger to inspect. I'm not sure what sort of protection he was expecting while doing this in a watch shop anyway - even if the store had their own security (which it sounds like they didn't), why would they get involved for a private transaction that just happened to be going on there? Doing this in a 7-11 would have probably offered as much protection.

This is something I could have fallen for if the buyer checked out online. I typically search email addresses, linkedin, etc to get a better idea of background. Definitely hope he was insured.

Supposedly the theft was so good he asked for background info on the seller so he wouldn't get scammed.

I live outside Chicago and here there are so many of these transactions many police stations actually have rooms for deals as a public service.

I wish this was me during a Seiko transaction. I’d have a story to tell.
