Taxes and customs duties from Japan?

Checking out a watch from Japan. Shipping with EMS.

Trying to find a clear answer but what fees should I be expecting?

I’ve never paid customs fees when buying from Japan but then again I’ve never had anything come in over 3k

Anything I’ve ever ordered from the official Japan sellers has always been under $2.5k and I’ve never paid any sort of additional fee. No idea how it would work for a private seller or higher value, but assuming it’s the same?

Just briefly reading about I think I understand that anything over 2.5k is subject to taxes. How much? Not sure. Might not be worth the extra costs.

Every JDM shipped to me via EMS was marked “gift” but the seller on the waybill. Haven’t been hit with anything yet. But those were big three sellers who knew how to do it.

I’ve bought multiple times from SeiyaJapan and ShoppingInJapan. Never been hit with customs and they both mark them as they actually are with full value, no gift marking to avoid getting hit.

Same with a couple $2k+ watches. Can’t remember what was claimed on value but seem to recall “wrist watch” or “watch for repair”
