Ahhhhh, screw it
I’m pretty sure I’ve decided to go all quartz. Wind it, set it (is it morning or afternoon? Take a full run around the dial to be sure). Just don’t do it between 8 PM and 4 AM. Or grab an SKX and shake for about 10 minutes to give it a decent wind. Grab and go? Nope, gotta wind it and set it first. Some people take pleasure in that, I don’t.
So, here’s what I’m thinking I’ll end up with, inshallah:
Either a GS quartz GMT or a Breitling Aerospace for daily wear.
Seiko Astron Dual Time for travel, the 5X53 looks like a winner.
Solar Seiko diver for pool/beater duty
The Aquatimer and probably a couple SKXs will hit the sales forum eventually. The only real hold up now is being in Abu Dhabi. I’ve sold a few from here with no issues, but it always makes me nervous.
Anyway, that’s where I’m at.

Always loved my Aerospaces. What about an X-33?
Re: Ahhhhh, screw it
I miss my x33 gen2 dearly.
Just gotta be careful of the bracelet because if you tweak one of the main non-removable links or link at the lug it will eventually break and you need to buy an entire new bracelet. Not sure if the gen3 bracelet is this way? Regardless, they’re great nato watches.

Second the X-33 (I like the original versions, personally - mine below).
Also - unless you really need the money, hold onto an SKX...just because.

Aerospace is awesome. Super quartz accuracy, lightweight, and no ticking second hand. Need a second time zone, stopwatch, alarm or countdown time, yeah it’s got that too.
Consider an Apple Watch too. I was a “never ever” guy until this year and I’m impressed - so functional.

Re: Ahhhhh, screw it
i'm at a 60/40 quartz to mechanical ratio right now myself. the days i want to wear on of the mechs, i end up grabbing a quartz to wear to work where i can then take the time to set the mechanical
just my .02- don't over look the Khaki Field quartz as a beater (i love mine). might not be appropriate for pool duty, tho.

Are we that busy that if you don’t have a winder for your autos or it’s a mechanical, that taking 30 seconds or so to set it is an issue?

Not me. I don't mind the winding and time setting. It's kind of medatative - slow and purposeful.tattoo chef wrote: ↑Fri Feb 22, 2019 7:46 amAre we that busy that if you don’t have a winder for your autos or it’s a mechanical, that taking 30 seconds or so to set it is an issue?

Guess for this crowd I should have said hand-wound mechanicals? Instead of a mechanical automatic?
Point being you need to wind a mechanical to get it going whereas you can put an auto on a winder.

Re: Ahhhhh, screw it
Seiko obviously does quartz like no one else.
A few others to consider:
Analog G-Shock for a beater.
For really good accuracy, the Bulova Lunar Pilot (their moonwatch) is great. On the large size, but lightweight and looks really good.
If you're okay with the size and style, the now discontinued Rolex Oysterquartz is considered to have one of the best quartz movements ever made, and very durable. They come up for sale pretty regularly on Recon, and most sell for the price of a pre-owned datejust.

Re: Ahhhhh, screw it
I hate to admit, but I used the po' man winder. I a watch on each wrist, velcro one to each ankle, and get on the treadmill for 4 minutes.

Re: Ahhhhh, screw it
I think if I decided to go all quartz/digital I'd get a smart watch and be done with it.
So many cool things you can do with them and integrate them with your smartphone.

Re: Ahhhhh, screw it
I've been on a vintage quartz kick for a while, and find myself wearing them more and more than my mechanicals. I don't own any modern quartz watches , but am considering something in between - a Seiko PADI SUN065 GMT with Kinetic movement. That's new territory for me. I've read of the problems that can be associated with Kinetic movements, but understand that the new ones have improved significantly.

Re: Ahhhhh, screw it
I’ll admit I’ve been eyeballing a new Garmin watch. The Alpina smart watch is kind of cool too. It uses a battery (2 year life span) instead of rechargeable, but the idea is a typical “smart watch” needs to be recharged every few days which is not not acceptable on a week long camping trip.
I’m off to kayak to a downed WW II P-47 and do a little diving to check out the wreckage. I have the coordinates to the location of the plane wreckage, and with a Garmin I could find it no problem. I’ll be using my iPhone sealed in a zip lock duct taped to the kayak.

Love the DLC aerospace. Great travel watch.

If I were you, I'd be angling for Terry's quartz GS diver (or one like it).

Re: Ahhhhh, screw it
while i like the ana-digi options I have a little fear around how easily they can be maintained/how long they will last. most of them are impossible to find a movement for. if i were to stick to quartz i would probably look at ones that the movement could be easily and affordably replaced if need be. or something higher end so that when the service bill comes i can look at it and know it was only a fraction of the "value" of the watch.
