Is it still available?

Post by Steve O. » Sun Feb 03, 2019 1:55 pm

NOTE: The following is a mini-rant born out of slight frustration. Proceed if you like, however, please hold all " it's part of selling", "HTFU", and "don't be a pussy" comments unless you're about to explode.

Chances are if you've ever sold anything on the sales forums, you've received one of these e-mails. Or two, or a dozen. There are two types - one that arrives without any preamble or context whatsoever. Is this about a watch I listed eighteen months ago, or the strap that I just listed? You'd be surprised how many times it's about the old watch listing, even though it was marked sold. However, sometimes you get lucky, and the item is right there in the subject line. Easy. Either it's still available or it isn't. Let's say it is. You answer a few questions (which the answers to are often already in the original listing), maybe take an additional pic or two, and sure, I'd be happy to calculate shipping cost to Botswana. Information sent and - hello? Crickets.

Obviously I've slightly over exaggerated, but recently it feels like not by much. How hard is it to reply "thanks, but no thanks" after asking about an item for sale? I'd do the same for you. Or are you just reassuring yourself that my strap is safe and sound? Over the past couple of weeks I've had about a dozen inquiries, and an "I'll take it."Only to have the person disappear like the proverbial fart in the wind.

It's part of selling, HTFU, don't be a pussy

Happens to me all the time too, I've gotten used to it although it still amazes me.

It's borne out of the deep ranks of people who want it but can't have it for whatever reason and can't control themselves.

Yes, courtesy is in short supply. Providing a name helps, too.

I guess I am one of those guys. I have found a lot of watches in the past that buyers just didn't sell or they were the wrong flavor of the month. So I ended up buying they almost a year after they had it for sale. But I only did this on watches that looked like they were still for sale.

Thanks to search engines like Lionseek and WatchRecon, finding posts from a long time ago is a lot easier

I have a couple watches listed on the FS board on here, where I got busy and never bothered to sell. Alternately, tons of guys don't mark their shit "sold".

I'm not seeing the huge problem here.

With my mom's passing several months ago I've been selling, and in some cases giving her belongings away on the Nextdoor Neighborhood app. I've had many people ask if things are still available, and even on the free items after sayingng yes I never hear back. Eventually legit people come around though.

I know what he’s saying.

I’ve had guys PM me, out of country, asking about watches posted years and years ago. And I always mark mine as sold. Usually it’s an old Seiko or Sinn. I’ve sold a few of those :0
