From what I recall:

Picked up a Speedmaster Ultraman. Incredible piece. This one's a keeper.
Seiko SBDC051. Really nice piece for the money. Just too much of a tweener for me. Essentially too nice to beat up like I do most Seiko divers, and wasn't getting the call for my wrist otherwise. Which is why it got flipped for a
Seiko SBBN017. Which is cool, but I'm just not a quartz guy. So this one went out.
Sold two others I really love because I needed to fund the Ultraman-the PAM372 and Sinn 103. I also sold an SRP775, because two NAFTs was too many for me.
Very happy with the collection now, although I have a lot less monetarily valuable collection overall than I've had in probably 6 or 7 years. Looking to pick up a BB58 in the next 1-2 years, and maybe I'll be done for awhile, apart from some cheap stuff, like the Hamilton khaki field, the new Certina DS, and maybe another cheap Seiko diver.

2018 ins & outs

Post by Ruggs » Thu Jan 03, 2019 7:17 am

I’m up rocking the baby and just spent a long ass time going through pics. Bottom line is I ripped through a ton of micros last year. I’ve got 8 slots in a (newish, smaller) watch box and that seems like it should be enough.

Out (or came but didn’t get asked to stay for breakfast)

Too big.
Image

Should have kept.
Image

Hated the hands.
Image

Cool watch. Had (still have) too many gray dials.
Image

Great watch. Lume on this is awesome, which I didn’t expect.
Image

Sold to hoppy
Image

DWC slut SMP.
Image

Image

Quartz watches with seconds hands bug me now, unfortunately. Also the gmt hand on this doesn’t jump hours. When you set it it moves freely. Nice watch otherwise.
Image

Had an older model without the yellow bits. Should have kept that.
Image

Such a cool watch. Just not practical when not being used for its intended purpose. That aquis case in Ti is one of the most comfortable watches I’ve ever had.
Image

Misaligned chapter ring. Would buy again in a second if I found a perfect one.
Image

Liked this one a lot but the bracelet clasp blows so much ass. You can’t use one of the holes without making it prone to coming open.
Image

Found an exceptional deal on this one. Gave to my brother.
Image

Was struck by how thin these are.
Image

Top heavy.
Image

I still like these. Nice and thin and the curved lugs fit my wrist well.
Image

USPS lost the package when I sold it and I ate the cost. Fuck.
Image

I keep buying pvd watches. They look better in pictures than they do on my arm. Nodus does good work, however. One to keep an eye on imo.
Image

Sold it to a guy in my office. When he wears it... I don’t miss it.
Image

See above about grey dials.
Image

Bought this to do a field watch comparison between this, a khaki field, and the partitio above. Never did it. The stowa stayed the longest.
Image

Blue dial and bezel didn’t match. Didn’t think it would bug me as much as it did.
Image

Bought this in Hawaii. Love that dial but don’t really like the way these wear.
Image

I have an omega mesh and wanted to try it on this. Nothing magical happened.
Image

Comfortable case, great lume, fkn hated the hands.
Image

Tried the 42mm version. Preferred the bigger one.
Image

I really like the design of these. It pisses me off that they can’t line up the fucking bezels.
Image

Sold to Terry. I imagine it’s probably in a toilet somewhere undergoing tests.
Image

Too tall.
Image

In
Bought this to give to my daughter one day.
Image

Imo the best version of the colt. 500m WR. Applied indices. 41mm. Shape of the lugs and lug hole placement is perfect for straps. Can be found easily for under 1500, which is a bargain.
Image

Exelonman had a deal I could not pass up. Don’t regret it. I’d definitely recommend the adjustable clasp upgrade.
Image

‘Technically’ this one is for sale. But only here, and I’m not putting it anywhere else.
Image

Can’t wait for the bracelet.

So I am not the only person who thought the Jenny was one big mofo??? Crazy, and it says it was a 42mm but it was huge.

No toilet, I modded it and sold it.

for me, it was a reduction year... 2 in and 6 out. I'm left with a speedy and an LPP chrono.
Dude - where’ve you been? Maybe I just missed your posts.. glad to see you’re still flippin watches :)

///

For me, I’ve swapped a bunch of higher end watches for cheaper ones as I’ve found that I enjoy some micros as much as the big guns..

Still have way too many tho

Edit: I’d give my left testicle for an old school explorer II  That’s my only 2019 goal after flipping the Black Bay

A 1655? I'm completely with you. Prices have gotten stupid expensive on them, unfortunately. Just like every other vintage sports Rolex.

The modern 5 digit Explorer II (16570) is my go-to right now. I love it. Tried the 42mm version, but it was too big for me.

Lol I can’t afford the 1655 ;)

The 16570 is the one I want. Perfect size, really comfortable yet rugged enough for a daily. As much as I travel, the GMT function is almost a necessity. To be honest, I can’t afford that one either lol

I can't afford a 1655 either, but it's fun to dream.

The 16570 is a great watch. I have the black dialed version. They aren't cheap, but they're definitely undervalued when compared to other 5 digit Rolexes. The sale of the black bay should put you a good ways toward one. If you can live without box and papers and are okay with a slightly older, non-pristine example, under $5,000 isn't out of the question.

For a 100m water resistant GMT function watch with a quick set hour hand (true traveler's watch), I can't recommend Alpina highly enough. I bought my "Ice Legacy" version for less than $600 on bracelet from a grey market dealer. It is a bit on the large size at 44mm, but I think it works well on canvas or single pass NATO.

This is mine on my skinny wrist:
Image
(also a 2018 "in" so appropriate for this thread)

Alpina offers a 42mm dual crown version with the same movement which looks interesting. In this model, the GMT function is displayed via a rotating disc very much like the JLC Navy Seals Alarm. I'm sure this model is more expensive as it is a newer release, but it looks good and a bit smaller.

FWIW, this watch has sold me on Rolex style GMT functionality with the quick set hour hand. I find this much more functional than my previous 2893-2 powered GMT watches.

This could be an affordable stand-in while you build the war chest for the 16570.
