Alpina's Shadow collection

Post by AtomicTom » Mon Dec 03, 2018 11:36 am

Have you guys by chance had time to catch these new Alpina watches yet?

The new Shadow collection looks to include three Startimer Pilot Automatics,
and two Startimer Big Date quartz chronographs. Not to mention, an Alpiner
4 Automatic as well.

For the Startimer Pilot Automatic you have 44mm PVD black, or rose gold
coated cases, and sunray gray, or blue dials with luminous hands, and
markers, connected leather e-straps, along with engraved case-backs
with the AL-525 automatic there behind it all.

Then with the Startimer Pilot Chronograph Big Date quartz Shadow models
you also have 44mm PVD cases, but only with black PVD this time. Along
with luminous hands, and markes, leather e-straps, and AL-372 calibre quartz
movement this time around.

Last, but not least, the Alpiner 4 Shadow with details like a black PVD 44mm
stainless steel case, 100M WR, black sunray dial with luminous markers, and
hands, eye-catching red accents, bi-directional rotating bezel, black leather
e-strap, and AL-525 automatic also.

Damn... I love Alpina more and more every month or so. Thanks for sharing, Tom.

Reminds me a little of the Glycine Airman Base 22 Mystery, except I think the Glycine is the nicer watch. Both from the "I don't really care about seeing the time" collection ;)

I think I'd like Alpina a lot better if they'd get rid of the goofy triangle at the base of the seconds hand and would lose the tapered crown. Both design elements are a turn-off for me.

I have no issue with the seconds hand, but the crown was super uncomfortable to use in my automatic Startimer chronograph.

I think the tapered crown is only on their pilot style watches. Their "Alpiner 4" collection uses a standard crown.

Seeing these reminds me I need to put a call into Alpina customer service to see if I can buy one of those bezel inserts for my Alpina Alpiner 4. I love the watch, but the compass bezel is a bit goofy.

They should use it everywhere ;) Or at least a non-tapered crown of some sort.

My first thought as well. Always loved this watch – owned one right up until the day they sold to Invicta. Been meaning to get something to replace it... This Alpina could fill that void.

The Alpina is a sweet watch and very affordable via multiple grey market dealers (I paid less than $600 for mine on bracelet).

The positive for Alpina Alpiner 4 GMT is the hour hand is independently adjustable (true traveler's GMT rather than the ETA 2893-2 mechanism). My example has been very accurate and has become my go-to travel watch. It is also anti-magnetic which is a positive for people like me who are in airports all the time. The "4" in the Alpina model designation stands for their sports watch requirements - anti-shock, anti-magnetic, rugged stainless steel case, and water resistant. Kind of like the "5" meaning in the Seiko model line.

The negative to the Alpina Alpiner 4 GMT is it is a big watch. It is 44mm diameter with slab sides and a large dial opening, so it wears true to size. If you like larger watches, this isn't an issue, but if you prefer smaller watches you will notice this one.

Alpina is using this same traveler's GMT movement in a new, dual crown, internal bezel, model that is 42mm in diameter.

I like my current Alpina so much I'll likely pick one of these dual crown models up sometime after the holidays just for fun.

Nice looking watches, looks like the Panerai date window guy is working at Alpina now.

Except for maybe a few small things, they aren't bad right guys?! :)

Have always liked how Alpina decided to change up the traditional aviation
watch just enough to stand out, but not enough to fall too far away from
tradition. ..Holy cow, that Glycine is something special too though
there above ! ..Thanks !!! :excited:
