Interesting. I’m familiar with radium dial markers and hands, but this is about bezels. Were the Bakelite bezels supposed to be luminous?
If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry.

Personally, I’m gun shy about owning any watch that used radium, even if it’s just on the dial under the crystal. Plenty of folks say it’s safe as long as you don’t eat it, but I’m not sure I believe that.

The New York Times story raises more questions than it answers. I don’t recall strontium being a radium decay product, rays don’t “leak out”, and the physical symptoms could all be attributed to being a naval officer in Hong Kong.
