~3500 cans of tuna = Kung Fu Canda

Post by gwells » Fri Oct 26, 2018 7:17 pm

Just got back from our CANstruction build out. This is about 3500 or so cans of tuna stacked up. Took us about 3 hours.

so, in case people don't know, CANstruction is something architecture firms across the country do with their local AIA (american institute of architecture) chapters to raise money and donate food to local food banks. it's a bit of a competition to see who can design the coolest structures and people do all kinds of interesting stuff.

we raised about $6000 to buy the cans and all of it got donated to the arlington food bank.

i asked that the first time we did this, too. the different teams tend to use a lot of different things. and food banks trade canned goods among themselves. so it's not a big deal. i saw one once that was 75% black olives.

That’s cool. How do you go about planning something like that? Is there software that gives you a blueprint or schematic?

we use CAD software (revit, in this case). the architects build it in revit in 3D and use plugins to help distribute the cans across the layers inside the shape. then they mark out circles where the cans go and the outline and we cut out foam core or cardboard sheets to go between layers.
