Over the summer I found a cool knife on eBay, after contacting the seller I found out he live/works in downtown Columbus. So he asked if I wanted to swing by his work to buy it and I agreed... was a tattoo parlor and I was on high alert. Come to find out he was a super nice, big but non threatening dude.

That is the only F2F I’ve ever been a part of.

There's any number of ways that someone could mug you, carjack you, or otherwise do you harm on a daily basis. To some points made earlier, I don't see how meeting at a bank or even a police station would prevent the buyer's or seller's buddies from jumping you when you walk around the corner to get your car.

While I wouldn't advocate meeting up with some guy who joined WUS yesterday and posted a WTB for a watch you're selling, I think a little due diligence and common sense will go a long way to making a F2F deal safe. I've never had an issue and I've actually met some cool watch guys along the way. That all said, do whatever makes you comfortable.

^^^ This. Even an old school phone call could help you to form a more informed opinion.

I’ve done plenty of f2f transactions for all kinds of things. I actually just got back from checking out a helmet. Met the guy at his house, 11:30 at night. I’m never to worried and just always carry a gun. You can size people up pretty quick and know if they’re gonna jack you or if they’re legit buying or selling. I completely avoid people coming to my house though. I won’t risk anything coming back to my home and family.

Well, this problem sorted itself as someone else bought it first.

I used to buy and sell Apple devices on Craigslist. I remember one ad I responded to, for a laptop. Guy lived probably 10 minutes from my house. It was like 1:30 in the morning, he replied and said he could meet right then. I was like, OK! Went to his house, there were a few other dudes and a chick there. Bought the laptop and went on my way.

In hindsight that was probably dumb.

No one here watches spies or covert ops films?

You choose a public space (the bank idea is great), and arrive earlier than the meeting hour to check out the place, identify exits, etc. (you ask the person what he is wearing). Check your tail after the deal, don't go straight to your house. I'm kind of kidding, but I actually do some of these things. I also never sit with my back facing the door at a restaurant

Talking with the person before the meet is good, you can get a feeling of what type of person you are dealing with. Going with someone else is also a good idea.

I used to do F2F deals all the time and never had a problem. Would meet guys at restaurants, fast food joints, malls, and even office parking lots. This was before the days of Craigslist and the bullshit sometimes associated with that and other sites. Maybe I was naive, but I was usually able to get a feel for someone's character over the phone. Just two watch guys getting together to discuss and possibly buy/sell/or trade watches. Never really worried about getting jumped at the local Arby's in the middle of the day.
