New member intro - grumpy old fart

Post by JohnnyR. » Tue Oct 09, 2018 8:48 pm

Was scolded (and called really mean names :crybaby: boo-hoo) for making my first post an appeal to purchase a watch (Sinn EZM9 if you want to sell! Heh!! :stir: ) so here’s my intro for folks that care.
Retired former mil and DOS currently holed up in New England. Raising an awesome daughter with the woman I love best.
Aviate, fish, hunt and ski in northern climes; dive, paddle and drink in southern. Love to land planes in short, unnamed places with no buildings for miles around. Care more for trees and critters than people because the former don’t shoot at you or steal your sh-t.

Some asked for watch pics (below).

Man! Just the time to put this BS together makes me appreciative of all the great postings present on this and other watch sites. Thanks to all of you guys who make the effort to keep the rest of us fed!

I'm no watch collector, but am keenly appreciative of mission-capable engineering. As a self reward for recently passing a professional milestone, I'm planning to add either a Tudor Pelagos LH or a Sinn EZM9 (or both?), + a new Seiko beater (SBDC53 or 63).

The G-Shock is an everyday wear. Climbing, jumping, range time, diving, outdoors activities, etc. - can't kill it. Like the screw back of the JDM version.
Image

Never wear the Tag GMT. Probably should sell it, but too many memories of foreign travel and meetings in bowties are associated. Maybe give it to my kid when she's older, as it feels too small for me.
Image

Can't find my old Tag 1500-series diver after a recent move (packed away somewhere), so it's not present. That watch, however, saw truly crappy jungle time in the southern cone and came out swimmingly (pun there...). I am impressed with the durability of that 90's era Tag quartz series). Here's a stolen eBay shot of one like mine

And, the GMT Master II 16750. Yeah, it ain't pretty. It was an end of tour and quasi-change of command gift. Lots of memories there. Some may be put off by its condition. Not me. I appreciate it because it whispers of a former life and reminds me of brothers gone. That watch saw multiple sandbox tours, lots of crawling through mud & sand & surf, rapid atmospheric & temp changes, hours of high rates of fire and rotorcraft vibrations, dives past 50M and countless wrenching sessions on the old Jeep & farm tractors. Scratched, chipped, faded, and I see those marks as testament to a great watch. In now for its first service in fifteen years at the WBG in CA. Yeah, I probably waited too long, but don't wear it much nowadays and hated to see it mailed off.

I'll update if the new pieces come through the door.

Welcome Johnny

We will need photos of your wife and daughter (if over 18) to confirm your story.

The EZM9 will be difficult to source used as there just aren’t many out there. Having owned one I’ll say it’s worth the money to buy one new. Just. Do. It.

You’ll find most of the guys here can appreciate a nice “used” watch. Nothing beats a watch that has an amazing history behind it. That history truly makes the watch priceless.
