Prospective buyer response (WUS)
Okay - so maybe I’m a little gun shy reading the PayPal debacle that’s currently going on but this guy’s response has me a bit nervous on selling that Doxa I have. Specifically the vacation/doorman part. Also, a little snarky - while I didn’t specify net or gross I also didn’t specify a payment method, so why would I? I hate selling on WUS.

I’ll leave the nickel and diming he’s doing to you, but I’d ask for references unless he’s already got some good ones on WUS, TZ, or TRF.
On edit: also what Terry says. Strikes me as the type of guy who will get the watch, find one scratch that he thinks you didn’t disclose, and whine about it.

I would pass or see if he will do a bank wire. If a buyer is going to be a dick about $58 on a $2k Watch, he is going to be a dick about the condition, etc...

I usually put on my for sale ads “paypaled and shipped” along with the asking price to avoid this kind of bs.

Re: Prospective buyer response (WUS)
I'll be the odd man out and say it doesn't sound so bad to me - I've heard worse and had the deal end up going smoothly. I'd check references and then require a bank wire and signature - I wouldn't care if it's signed by his doorman, butler, housekeeper, pool boy, whatever. As long as it's signed for you have proof of delivery.
As others have said, it's best to be explicit in your ad about what fees you expect the buyer to pay. Ambiguity leads to misunderstandings.

Good point about being specific - no issues next time.logan2z wrote:I'll be the odd man out and say it doesn't sound so bad to me - I've heard worse and had the deal end up going smoothly. Re: Prospective buyer response (WUS)
he sounds like a pain in the ass but If your price doesn't say net to me or you cover the fees, then I always assume that the fees are included in your price.
Re: Prospective buyer response (WUS)
2015 WUS join date with only 187 posts is a red flag to me for a $2K watch. He doesn't have enough invested in the forum to give you any leverage if he behaves poorly. He can walk away from 187 posts pretty easily.
A quick search of his posts finds one of his initial threads (about 3 months into his tenure at WUS) where he complains that the Seiko Boutique in NY would not accept PayPal or his AMEX (due to his AMEX having differing billing and shipping addresses). He purchased from some on-line dealer instead.
He also states back in this past February he believes offering 20% below asking is reasonable. I get the sense he is likely honest, but he enjoys haggling.
Given all the post-sale negotiation tactics I've read about in PayPal, I would say if you were to do business, I would accept only bank wire.

Re: Prospective buyer response (WUS)
That’s fair. Like I said I may be gun shy but it just seemed odd. Immediately agrees to pay full price, a somewhat complicated story of summer homes and doormen, and then the fee issue. Limited posts in WUS but nothing there that seems worrying in his posts.
I offered a payment via bank wire and we’ll see what his response is. But I’m not hopeful.

Dayum nice detective work - much appreciated. I did a cursory look at this posts but didn’t read all of them and obviously missed those. Good info. Bank wire offered so we’ll see.Ryeguy wrote:2015 WUS join date with only 187 posts is a red flag to me for a $2K watch. Re: Prospective buyer response (WUS)
I have one to share (no names) from my Squale 60 ATMOS sales post at WUS.
I received a contact from someone who was new to the forum and had zero posts.
I responded:
Thanks for your interest in the watch.
From what I can see, looks like you just joined the forum and have no posts.
I prefer to deal with "established" members of the forum.
Matt
His response to what I wrote:
To be honest, your watch is what made me join. Thanks for making a newbie feel welcome.
Hope you can find someone who meets your "criteria" to sale to. You may want your requirements that in your ad.
It ended on a good note, though.
I got back in touch with him to elaborate on my answer and explain that I did not intend to insult him or be un-welcoming.
I encouraged him to get involved with the forum.
He said he understood my reluctance to sell to someone with no history on the forum.
We left on good terms.
Glad I just didn't tell him to fuck-off.

Re: Prospective buyer response (WUS)
I just sold a watch to a 1 poster registered 2010 and that one post was a sale way back when. Turns out he was retired coast guard old timer so we talked on the phone for a good 15minutes about service stories and watches. Some legitimate buyers have no interest in posting and really do lurk. Felt like talking to my father really. My old man is curmudgeon and gives zero-Fs about participation, but lurks woodworking, car, and gun forums like a beast.
I’ve been making a point of getting phone numbers and at least developing a text conversation. Some of the text conversations have been fulfilling and one even led me to my next purchase.

Re: Prospective buyer response (WUS)
Matt,
I had several members that have joined because of the watches I was selling. I had to triage them just to see if my gut feelings were positive or negative. Hell, one member was from Brazil and wanted me to send the watch to Orlando as he has contacts there(relative). I decided to send it for various reasons(communications via PM, etc) and it worked out. He had less than 10 posts, but after reading them, he seemed like a genuine person. He even left me a positive feedback.
All were done via PayPal.

Re: Prospective buyer response (WUS)
^^ Matt - did he buy the watch?
Chris - I’d make the deal - asshats have money as well as us nice guys. Selling sucks and if you get a buyer on the hook, pull hard
Good luck with the bank wire suggestion.
