IWC don't make 'em like they used to
IWC don't make 'em like they used to
Obviously not a diver, but thought my new Spitfire UTC was worth sharing.
Didn't know this watch existed until two or so weeks ago, just landed today. Discontinued in 2014 I believe, luckily scored a NOS example with all stickers and paperwork. Screwdown crown, independently adjustable hour hand, clean 24-hour GMT display at 6:00, 39mm MKXV case with applied luminous numerals and two dial finishes. Super-simple but wildly functional. And criminally undervalued.
Considering the only GMT/traveler alternative in the current Pilot collection is the 46mm Timezoner for $12k, I doubt I'm alone in hoping that IWC plots a return to these kinds of quiet innovations in the post-Kern era.

Love the look and you are right they don’t really make them like that anymore and gust is a shame.

Very nice, I get tempted by the 'standard' version every once in a while.
Re: IWC don't make 'em like they used to
I agonized over this vs. the Spitfire version, and ultimately wanted a newer one (hard to find the OG variants that haven't been over-polished), plus I really like the applied elements and the UTC aperture at 6:00. They did make a pretty nice black Spitfire version that bridges the two, but it doesn't have luminous numerals, and I'm really just more of a silver-dial-guy.

#sorrynotsorry
For what it's worth, the black Spitfire came up the least in my two-week search – likely that it was produced in the lowest numbers of all the UTC variants. Happy hunting!

It's not a date wheel, it's the UTC time.toxicavenger wrote: ↑Wed Sep 05, 2018 6:14 pmcool watches but that exposed date wheel confuses a simpleton like me

Re: IWC don't make 'em like they used to
Even IWC isn't messed up enough to put two different date windows on the dial. Or are they...toxicavenger wrote: ↑Wed Sep 05, 2018 6:27 pmlike i said it "confused me"logan2z wrote: ↑Wed Sep 05, 2018 6:20 pmIt's not a date wheel, it's the UTC time.toxicavenger wrote: ↑Wed Sep 05, 2018 6:14 pmcool watches but that exposed date wheel confuses a simpleton like me

I miss my 3227 - what a great watch.
But my IWC grail is the 3705. Good luck finding one.

I'll second that it's a keeper
Re: IWC don't make 'em like they used to
I've actually never liked exposed date wheel, but I really like the exposed UTC time wheel.toxicavenger wrote: ↑Wed Sep 05, 2018 6:27 pmlike i said it "confused me"logan2z wrote: ↑Wed Sep 05, 2018 6:20 pmIt's not a date wheel, it's the UTC time.toxicavenger wrote: ↑Wed Sep 05, 2018 6:14 pmcool watches but that exposed date wheel confuses a simpleton like me

No they don't. Although they fixed their pilot Chronograph line eliminating windshield wiper date window and rolled out a few great models. Anxiously waiting for 3706 2.0
However they missed the boat with AT. I still miss this one if they only fixed dumb strap system

Re: IWC don't make 'em like they used to
Hard to disagree, there's really nothing in the current lineup that I lust after. But this one never gets old...
Re: IWC don't make 'em like they used to
Only current one I'd like is the LPP Chrono on bracelet. That's about it.
