IWC don't make 'em like they used to

Post by hoppes-no9 » Thu Sep 06, 2018 8:55 am

IWC actually DOES make 'em like they used to. They just produce a whole lot of crappy designs in addition to the good stuff.

I think this is pretty special, and suspect Genta would be OK with it:

These old Pilot bracelets are so damned good. Perfect brushed finish, and the pyramid-shaped beads bring depth and texture without the bling.

Sure beats the bracelet on the current model IMHO...

I was just looking at IWC watches on WatchRecon and noticed that Big Pilots seem pretty cheap right now, at least compared to what I remember.

The 3706s aren’t bad either.

That is the Gen2 Pilot bracelet and the one I like best...also known as 'the rows of corn' bracelet The Gen1 was a beauty also but the ends were, I think, a little finicky. Gen1 and 2 felt light on the wrist even though they were solidly made. The Gen3 bracelet was a little heavier.

A pic of mine:

The current bracelet (Gen4) looks very generic and I think is cheaply made. A total disappointment when compared to the three which preceded it.

lol!

I do like a few of IWCs current watches but not enough to drop any money on them. The original UTC with that cool buffalo strap is one of my faves though. A friend of mine got one as a wedding watch and it looks great in person.
The 3706 and doppelchrono version are up there on my list of IWC references as well.

Good to know they were once capable of positioning the date window correctly.

Tell me if I’m wrong, but it looks like on modern iterations, they increased the size but lazily did not modify the movement accordingly, so they ended up with the fucked up date?
I don't want to crap on any Mark XVIII owners, but yes...you, me, and other critics have remarked about the date-window creep (towards the dial center) as IWC has up-ticked the size.

I'd rank IWC above Rolex in terms of bracelet innovation. The ratcheting clasp was glidelock meets easy-link and the push-button release was icing on the cake.

Miss the Mk. XVIII but enjoying my 114270 immensely.

That's the first open date window I've ever seen that I liked. I like that they carried the black thru.

I’d we’re going to include the windshield date window we should include the Mk xviii window.

I thought this thread was for early IWC and not yesteryear.

My biggest watch design peeve is the windshield / viagra date window. As an intelligent human , based on today's date, I can easily deduce what yesterday was and what tomorrow will be. It's simply silly - it's trying too hard to fit the flight altimeter paradigm into a place where it doesn't belong.

Very cool info – glad I got the bracelet on mine, been super impressed with it, but couldn't quite put a finger on what made it so dramatically different from the Mark XVIII version I handled.

Yep, exactly what kept me away from getting an IWC Chrono for so long. I wanted a modern 3777 case not 3717 but they had to do that date mess. Thank God they fixed it.
