Just what Movado needs - another "Lifestyle Watch and Accessories Brand." :raised:

Funny, I just started seeing their commercials on television....

Post by dmgreen11 » Fri Aug 17, 2018 12:44 pm

Seeing as the watches look to be garbage, I was wondering how they had the funds to run a national television advertising campaign.

Just goes to show you that savvy marketing and brand positioning can go a long way. There are dozens of newer brands / micros making far superior watches at this price point that are struggling to simply stay in business, while these empty timepieces resulted in a $300 million sale to Movado.

As for the brand formerly known as Movado, well......

If I was the owner selling to Movado I would be laughing the whole way. I am struggling to figure out where they got their valuation, clearly there was more to the company than I was aware of...

Wouldn’t their valuation come, in part, from converting their social media following (which most here condemn) into the sale of 1.5M watches globally? And if the social media numbers game is accurate, that means they’re reaching close to 10-15M potential customers who are potential buyers.

I think Movado knows exactly what they want to do with them and what they’re buying.

The valuation is around 2.8x revenue , that’s high for retail but not out of bounds , especially as graham pointed out with the marketing power metric of their social media presence.

Their watches are all priced less than $200 looks like, and sold online. Obviously both are huge benefits for them selling to their younger (naive) target market.

As much as I hate/dispise social media I guess this is further proof it appeals to the masses (sheep). The Kardashian Effect in full bloom.

I'm sure they are laughing all the way to the bank.

It’s just the newest manifestation of being “popular” and people want the popular things.

I think it’s easier these days to get new buyers and harder these days to keep them. I think you get new buyers with a great product at a great price and you keep new buyers with a great warranty and great customer service; and I think the combination of those factors could provide the foundation to build a great company, which would put someone in a pretty great spot these days.

it's a fashion watch. being sold by movado. *shrug* just cuz people just want a fashion watch doesn't mean they're sheep, just means they have different priorities. mvmt owners probably think we're crazy too. it is what it is.
