Re: Hodinkee's "One-watch" article
I'd like to try it - I sell mine anyway, might as well find one I can love with or maybe a variation of that would be have one watch at a time....sell one, buy one but just keep it at one...or trade but you get the idea.

F'ing greatness. I will own a pepsi version before I'm 6 feet under.matt.wu wrote: ↑Tue Jul 10, 2018 11:49 amHonestly, as cliche as it is, I think 16710 is the best one-watch (also not a dive watch, sorry).
I think a one-watch needs to be 1) durable, 2) versatile, 3) interesting. And for me, one more - needs to have some sort of horological significance (interesting complications, in-house movements, storied history, etc... - at least one thing from a list like that).
16710 checks all of those boxes:
1) It'll take anything you can throw at it, and it's toughness has been proven for many, many years on many, many wrists. As an additional plus, service costs and turnaround time is very reasonable and can be had at many different locations.
2) Versatility? I'd be hard pressed to think of one more versatile. You can buy black, pepsi, or coke bezel inserts (or even root beer or brown if you wanted). You can go with jubilee or oyster, but it also looks great on NATO or even leather straps. You can wear it literally "beach to boardroom" without anyone batting an eye. Many watches claim this, but most are ridiculous.
3) Personally, I like having a couple complications in my watch - definitely a date, hopefully one more. GMT (with quick-adjust hour hand) is one of my favorites, and I actually use the 16710 bezel as a timing bezel as well. Then there's the fact that Rolex, love or hate it, has done a ton for the watch industry. The ability to mass produce high quality in-house movements consistently is amazing.
And I prefer the 5-digit Rolex bracelets (with non-dive clasps) to the modern bracelets. They're just way more comfortable for long-term and every day, every situation wear.
Re: Hodinkee's "One-watch" article
Yeah the 16700 has a quick-set date and no independent hour hand, which came later with the GMT Master II. Changing the date on my BLNR was just not enjoyable to me. With just 6 watch collection my rotation still requires me to set the date on my watches pretty frequentlymatt.wu wrote: ↑Wed Jul 11, 2018 4:10 pm16700 doesn't have independently adjustable hour hand though, does it? I think that's worth the trade off of the "II" and quickset date.Knome wrote: ↑Wed Jul 11, 2018 4:08 pmI guess I'd go with my 16700 GMT Master, I hate the "II" on the dial more than a cyclops.
No mods, nothing. Just GMT and a quickset date.
Also if this actually came to pass and my one watch was a rolex, id probably have lost all my passion for watches as well and wouldn't really care to mod it anyways.

Especially painful on that Jumbo.... you should sell it.... to me.Knome wrote:Yeah the 16700 has a quick-set date and no independent hour hand, which came later with the GMT Master II. Re: Hodinkee's
hahah my whole collection seems to be built around accommodating the jumbo's lack of quick-set date. 16700 quick-set, black bay no-date, big pilot long power reserve so i rarely have to set it at all, etcmatt.wu wrote: ↑Thu Jul 12, 2018 9:48 amEspecially painful on that Jumbo.... you should sell it.... to me.Knome wrote:Yeah the 16700 has a quick-set date and no independent hour hand, which came later with the GMT Master II. the jumbo is the glue that holds it all together
Re: Hodinkee's "One-watch" article
The only thing I don't love about the 6694 I posted above is the lack of quick set date. I wind it every day whether I'm wearing it or not. Just don't want to deal with having to re-set the date.
But my Explorer II 16570 has the same movement as the 16710. I don't find changing the date on that one to be too cumbersome and, like Matt, I like the independent hour hand.

Re: Hodinkee's
I have basically become a one watch guy, wearing my Seiko SBDX019 99% of the time. That'll change hopefully in the next couple weeks when I get the call for my Tudor BB58. That may become my next one and only watch, I haven't really decided whether or not I'll keep both, but I really do like the simplicity of having just one watch that I wear all the time. I finally got off the treadmill of chasing, flipping, etc.

My SubC would be my "one" watch. I wear it about 85% of the time right now.

My "last one to leave" watch has changed over the years. In the past, the picks included the Marinemaster, the 3536, Ocean Bund to name a few.
But over the last 3+ years, "the one" hasn't changed for me...it's still the BP Aqua Lung.

For me, it has to be the omega smp 300 - any of the versions from the 2531.80 to the modern ceramic - all winners to me. Comfortable, versatile, and incredibly easy to service.
Re: Hodinkee's "One-watch" article
I think it’d be a touch call between my BLNR and the polar Exp II, with the BLNR winning out by a nose.

Probably the best thread we’ve had on DWC in awhile...
I could do with almost all of my watches as “one” watch at this point, except the X-33, which doesn’t have enough water resistance...but therein lies the problem and why I have 10+ watches; I like ‘em all for different reasons.

It just might have to be this one: Rolex oyster 40mm case w/ triplock crown; second timezone bezel that can also be used as a dive timer, chronograph with screw down pushers, date, porcelain panda configuration, and a sapphire crystal all in a very attractive and legible execution.
