is Revolution smoking crack?

Post by dinexus » Mon Jul 09, 2018 3:37 pm

...maybe I'm just not brushed up on my Speedmaster lore, but in what universe does a pre-moon Speedy with replaced hands and a dear-god-what-is-that-bracelet go for $15k??

...or have I just been living under a rock and this is actually some kind of a great deal?

I have no idea about the overall piece, but it does have one of those uber rare “dot over 90” bezels. Not a speedy guy, so can’t comment otherwise.

Edit: this kinda beat up bezel alone was listed for $2700 and sold. https://omegaforums.net/threads/speedma ... -90.55946/

I have to admit that I don't always understand the watch collector mentality either. I could maybe see paying a huge premium for a Speedy that's actually been to space. But otherwise the watch is essentially the same as the Speedys being produced today (a dot on the bezel notwithstanding ;) ), so paying a premium for an old beat-up version doesn't really make a lot of sense to me

At least with the new one you get a decent bracelet

And that was a dot-over-90 bezel that no longer had the dot  Hang on, so you mean I can take a regular Speedy bezel, put a chip in it over the 90 and sell it as a dot-over-90 with some 'patina' for $2700? Brilliant! ;)

Probably a little high if the Speedmaster 101 website price chart is accurate, but not outside the range that these are going for. Also assuming the description is accurate.

The bracelet is a JB Champion - not OEM. It’s what the astronauts used in the 60s and 70s. Supposedly, its flimsy build quality was a feature for them, because it would break easily if it got caught on anything.

In the end, the market is the market, but vintage Speedies are going for stupid money these days.

That's a JB Champion bracelet. Totally legit bracelet for a true vintage Speedmaster, and what many of the astronauts wore their Speedmasters on, actually.
Edit: what Jeff said in the post above.
