'rare' Domino's Rolex for auction
Re: 'rare' Domino's Rolex for auction
I remember Capetown Diamond had one of these Rolex “Domino’s” on their site for years. It just wouldn’t sell.
Re: 'rare' Domino's Rolex for auction
I really don't get why anyone would find this watch desirable. Who the hell wants a Domino's logo on their watch?
Re: 'rare' Domino's Rolex for auction
Getting back on track, I met a guy a few years ago who was given one of these in the 1990s for having one of the top-selling Dominos franchises in the country. I thought that was pretty cool.

I must be missing something. As others have illustrated, these have been—FS but not selling—on various fora for years. Rare? No.

As to the rest of the discussion, I wholeheartedly agree. The hobby has become far less enjoyable due to the various factors discussed above.

Probably going to see a lot more of these for sale now (if the dials weren't all swapped out already)...

I’m sure some dealer paid $200 for a huge pile of the take off dials - just waiting to swap them back for maximum $$$. Just like the stupid “blue berry” inserts (with zero factual production history).ncstate1201 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 30, 2018 5:57 amProbably going to see a lot more of these for sale now (if the dials weren't all swapped out already)...

I agree with what others have said - the rapid price increase on "garden variety" Rolex models has taken a lot of the fun out of this hobby. As little as 5 years ago (maybe even 3), you could get a common five digit Sub or GMT for under $6,000, and maybe even under $5,000. Around 7 years ago I purchased a 14060 without a bracelet for under $3,000. I passed on a 1990s GMT for about $3,800 because I thought it was just a bit too expensive.
Of course, it's all relative - most people would consider those prices astronomical for a watch, but compared to where they are now, they were a bargain. I don't think you can find a 14060, a 16600, or a 16610 for less than $6,000 now, and if you can, it's in really beat up condition. The GMT thing is ridiculous. Going beyond Rolex, vintage Omega Speedmaster prices have gone up remarkably.
And now sellers are trying to get a premium for "Swiss only" dials and Dominoes watches ("much like how a Comex watch has the provenance of a commercial diver, my watch has the provenance of someone who can get you a pizza in thirty minutes or less"). Sorry, but I fold.
On edit: nevermind the price increase on Tudor Subs. Jeez.

Re: 'rare' Domino's Rolex for auction
I just saw someone selling a NOS black eta BB for $8,000! why? Because “only 2500 were produced”!
There has never been any evidence of that number. It’s just people making it up to sell shit. I took a long hiatus from the active collector lifestyle and I’m about ready for another one.
I calculated my household income recently - 97th percentile. When someone that high in the income distribution thinks that prices are obscene, there’s a real problem. FOMO will only push the market so far, and I hope the speculators are all caught holding the bag.

LOL "only 2500 were produced" what a crock of shit, the way Tudor pumped them out - no way. And, 2500 is not a limited number for anything. Even a 1000 is not "really" limited.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Mon Apr 30, 2018 9:42 amI just saw someone selling a NOS black eta BB for $8,000! why? Because “only 2500 were produced”!

I forgot about the ETA black bezel BB's. $8,000 is probably an outlier, but I've seen people trying to peddle them for over $4,000. Just completely made up rarity and desirability.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Mon Apr 30, 2018 9:42 amI just saw someone selling a NOS black eta BB for $8,000! why? Because “only 2500 were produced”!

Re: 'rare' Domino's Rolex for auction
sure, one day I'll be kicking myself for selling that 'ultra-rare' ETA BBBlack
as for the Domino's Rolex... the pizza sucks, the watch is worse

The difference between the 97th percentile and 99ths is significant though, and there are 1.6 million households in the 99th percentile in the U.S.Steve O. wrote: ↑Tue May 01, 2018 8:14 amWow.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Mon Apr 30, 2018 9:42 amI calculated my household income recently - 97th percentile.
