Polished to Brushed
Do we have anyone here who does a good job brushing watches? I want to brush a Pam from all-polished to all-brushed

Yep, that’s perfect!

That looks great, I like aggressive brushing actually, not everything has to be fine satin

That guy knew what he wanted for sure. That was one of the first new Daytonas on TRF and he had it brushed immediately. I think I might have gone with PCLs, but the lugs look amazing.

Beau has been brushing a bunch of my stuff: he's got a speedy at the moment and just did the 017:

Re: Polished to Brushed
You had your SLA017 brushed? Did you get any feedback regarding having difficulties due to the Diashield coating?
Just curious if it flaked off like a chrome plating would or if he was able to just brush right over it.

I hope you want to keep that PAM for a long time.
Re: Polished to Brushed
Which PAM? I thought about doing that to my 112 years ago. Can’t wait to see the results.

Re: Polished to Brushed
Thats a big reason why I got the 176 - it's already brushed

They also re-brushed my scratched up 243

Re: Polished to Brushed
I would have chosen a finer brush finish than this for a Daytona. This is a a little coarse, I think.JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Wed Apr 04, 2018 6:57 amHere's a good thread if you haven't seen it:

Brushed watches rule.
Re: Polished to Brushed
yes, the 017: no troubles with the new brushed finish. He also removed the ceramic insert to see if he could blast the face but it looked "too soft" so he passed rather than screw it up. the rolex ceramic insert is a bit easier to blast.
Re: Polished to Brushed
Good of him to stop before he damaged something. This is my problem too often at home projects.
Interesting to learn the bezel insert is removable ceramic. In comparing mine to my MM300, I was thinking it was maybe the same construction with lacquer over stainless.
I kind of wish your guy had taken photographs of the disassembled watch. It would be interesting to see how Seiko constructed everything.
Re: Polished to Brushed
SPB051/053 appears to have the same bezel insert so if it's Ceramic then that makes those 2 even a better deal.Ryeguy wrote: ↑Wed Apr 04, 2018 12:45 pmGood of him to stop before he damaged something. This is my problem too often at home projects.

I prefer brushed also. This may be a dumb question, but on links, how do they get all around the links to make sure the whole surface is brushed?

Re: Polished to Brushed
See 2AR2C1's post above. LAWW was apparently able to remove the SLA017 bezel insert. I was surprised as I thought it was similar in construction to the MM300 with lacquer over stainless and all one piece. Maybe LAWW removed the entire bezel assembly and noted the insert was too soft to bead blast (dull) which would make sense if it were lacquer.
I assumed my SPB053 insert was aluminum. Would be cool if it were ceramic, but I'm not certain it is. Either way, I think both my SPB053 and my SLA017 look just fine in stock form.
I'm mostly just glad to hear the SLA was able to be brushed without the Diashield coating flaking off. There were some photos floating around of Shoguns with discolored / flaked off sections and I was concerned this was how Diashield might wear over time.
If LAWW was able to brush it as smoothly as 2ar2c1's photos suggest, I'm guessing it isn't a coating that will flake, but rather some kind of surface hardening technique, more akin to anodizing aluminum.
Sorry for totally derailing this thread on brushing a polished surface!
Re: Polished to Brushed
I understand the allure of brushed versus polished and all that, but IMO that Daytona is just wrong.
