Thanks for reinforcing how out of touch I am.

Long before she was famous.

Rolex is extremely heavy in marketing to the golf audience. Perhaps the "rich mans sport" cliche may not really be cliche. Also, just to clarify, I'm neither rich not a Rolex owner, but a golfer.BlueSky wrote:Arnold Palmer sold a boat load of Rolexes, or whatever the plural of Rolex is.

Re: Tudor
This made me LoL.
As to Tudor/Gaga, it’s like old S&W revovers and pints of craft IPA: I like ‘em both, but they’re not such a good idea to combine.
But I’m damn near old enough to consider Tenzing Norgay a brand ambassador.
The plural of Rolex is "smelody."
Whatever happened to him? His old car finaly bankrupt the guy?
Re: Tudor
From the brand's perspective, I get it. They're trying to reach out to a new generation of potential watch buyers, who at this point, are showing little interest in watches and very little interest in luxury goods. How do you show them at these products are in fact intended for them? Show it on the wrist of someone who they might identify with.
It's the same reason why Omega puts their watches in the Bond movies, or brands pay for movie product placement in general, hoping you'll identify with the movie and therefore the product.
Does it actually work? Probably not. But business isn't good in Switzerland so they gotta try something.

Re: Tudor
Exactly. It shouldn't but it does. I'll settle for an ambassador less polarizing, someone who's universally liked
Re: Tudor
You really don't see any brands market when it comes to sports in the US ( Hockey, Football, Baseball, Basketball), however watch brands market in Soccer, F1, Tennis, Sailing....Hublot, Tag, Bremont, Panerai, Omega , and Rolex...

He still posts wrist shots. He doesn't contribute much else, but there are others here that do the same and get no grief.Sidheguitarist wrote:This made me LoL.

Good to hear. Not out to give anyone grief, just glad he’s still alive and kicking.

Here is a data point: Name one watch you purchased or became interested in due to a pop culture brand ambassador.Seppia wrote: ↑Sun Apr 01, 2018 12:36 amI'm not sure how you know brand ambassadors don't work.
I agree you should never rule out "stupidity" as the reason brands do things, but there are entire marketing teams of handsomely paid seasoned marketing professionals behind these choices.
What kind of insight or data do you have to know "it doesn't work"?
I can see Rolex and golf greats. This makes sense as the demographics align.
A former professional soccer player and a pop musician for Tudor? I don't see the connection at all.

We are a small group of watch fanatics and serial flippers. We are not the target of their demographic studies and advertising

Victorinox: Source Code
Omega: The American

JLC: Bad Teacher
I think it's clear that putting the right watch on the right influential wrist can not only lift all brands involved by putting products in front of new audiences, it can also excite your current audience. I think that's where this Tudor stuff is such a misstep. Hell, they had Jimmy fucking Chin, who would have done all the aforementioned, but that disappeared as soon as Beckham showed up. So disappointing.
