Metric for the win.

We use metric 'bar' for gas pressure but they still teach psi calculations for gas management in diving though...just in case you have to dive with some dinosaur from an imperial country.

(1 bar is essentially the pressure the atmosphere exerts at sea-level and you add a bar for every 10m of additional depth - so a 30bar watch is rated for 29 bar of water (= 290m) + 1 bar for the atmosphere above the water)

There's two types of countries in the world:
1. Those that use the metric system and..
2. Those that have been to the fucking moon

If they tried this switch again, I bet there would be political candidates whose would make their main platform to rally against

I’d switch to metric in a heartbeat. What I refuse to do is put a comma for my decimal place.

For real, though. That comma shit is for heathens.

I'm cool with mm on watch related stuff and small measurements in general. But for items less than a meter, I use inches. I have no mental idea what is 10cm long.
Ed will give a reference pic.... Image
This is just shy of 9cm

We have a haphazard mixture of imperial and metric in the UK.
Large stuff is measured in feet, smaller stuff in mm & cm. However very large stuff is in Meters & very very long in Miles.
We weight ourselves in Stones/pounds, but weigh small items in grams and Kgs.
So how do you buy cheese for instance, half a kilo or a pound?
The answer to that is oddly complex...
It's due to the older generation of the UK wanting to hang onto pounds/ounces, and the EU saying that we should legally display grams/KG.
We have both.. but gradually pounds/ounces are dying out.

However, in old family independent stores, they still go by pounds/ounces.

It's like that with all products, as there is a legacy from imperial.. for instance - Fencing, and the timber industry.. that is almost always in feet & inches.
So, if you need a fence panel, it's 3, 4, 5, 6 foot panels etc.

Just to royally mind-fuck you completely.. we used to have 240 pennies in £1. And pennies were labelled as 'D'.. not 'P' as they are now.
Figure that shit out - thankfully that was before my time!
And most importantly beer is served in pints!

Doubtful, maybe at some point....Use the metric system all the time when in Canada...

------------------------

on separate note, I think it's cool that in Montreal they have eliminated the penny..

We use metric and use a decimal point not a comma.

We use kilometres, meters and millimetres, for some reason we don't use cm. We also use inches and feet but it seems to be more older people, the younger generation don't.

We weigh ourselves in Stone or Kg and weigh food in oz or grams. It makes complete sense to us.

It seems to me the only people that use Kg the world over are drug dealers ImageImage

^^ That all makes sense to me, except not using CM.. that's weird!

But then again, if you use MM, then it's practically the same thing, but x10 better

I do think it's funny that even though most of the earth uses metric we still measure screen size in inches. When you look at the specs of mobile phones or TVs the outside case dimensions are in cm/mm but the screen is inches.

Look at tyres, both metric and imperial in all tyre sizes. Metric width and imperial diameter.

That's interesting. I was trained as a scientist, so I'm pretty comfortable with metric. However, "18" rim" makes a lot more sense to my brain than "45.7cm rim"

That IS bizarre that the tires are measured like that. I guess it's a result of industry attempting to convert to P-Metric but hasn't completely.

Off road tires are still commonly measured in inches, 32" tire, 33" tire referring to its diameter. Once switched to P-Metric there was even more confusion introduced to the sizing. For instance not everyone knows that in 255/50R18 the second number 50 is not in MM but in the the percentage of the first number, so 50% of 255 is 127.5mm the height of the wall not 50-anything

Anyway, what started out as a mini rant turned into a decent thread.

Funny how this thread moved to tires. I just arrive in Tempe, AZ, today(late Thursday night) for a Blatchford Big Doc meeting tomorrow and then flying out to San Diego on Friday night to purchase a company car Saturday morning. I am in the middle of purchasing wheels and tires for my Toyota Tundra that I will be purchasing in Imperial, CA and shipping to FL, .
