Missed opportunity

Post by goaliechris » Wed Feb 14, 2018 6:58 pm

I was on business in Louisville and my meeting was near a local Rolex dealer. I stopped in and talked to a salesperson there about their Daytona waitlist and laughing about how ridiculous it is. He asked me what else I was thinking about and I said I was interested in an older Rolex Pepsi GMT. He smiled and said that they just got one in trade and went to the safe.

He came out with a well worn 1675 from 1968 with faded bezel that a guy recently traded in. One owner, box and papers. It was scratched up all around included the acrylic crystal. But that patina and the hands were amazing! Beautiful. I wanted it so badly. He said he had to check with his watch specialist in the store and talk to his manager about pricing and would call me later as I had to go.

30 minutes later he texted me later to tell me that he hadn’t known that someone had called in the day before and put a deposit on it. Crushed.

Sorry I didn’t take pictures - I had the chance but thought I would be doing it with it on my wrist as its owner. Oh well...

What it has done has focused my search. A 1675 or 16750 Pepsi WILL be in my future. But that was a tough one to see go to someone else.

Oh I could write it like an old Dear Penthouse letter. There was a similar feeling in my loins.

Yes, I said loins.

Yukon - Exactly and thanks for the offer! Very nice of you. Good people there - I like that place.

Missed opportunity

Post by goaliechris » Sat Feb 17, 2018 8:13 am

Quick question for the Rolex guys - jeweler found me a 1675 from approx 1974 with newer bracelet. Some patina on bezel, acrylic in decent shape. I haven’t seen pics yet but is the newer bracelet a big deal at all? My feeling is as long as the head is original and in good condition relatively speaking that’s the main thing. Checking on paper and box status.

Update - no box or papers. $10.5k.

Any thoughts?

IMO dial and hands are what's most important on vintage Rolex/Tudor. After that, I'd much rather have papers on a vintage watch than a period correct bracelet. And you can always pick up the "correct" bracelet later, although it may cost you a kidney or your first born.

^ yup

Bracelet is not a big deal at all. Price is completely dependent on condition.

How about absence of papers? Let’s say dial, hands, bezel all check out as original. Would you wait for another opportunity given no papers? I know it’s based on level of comfort.

I've seen so many fake papers lately - even from "good sellers". A shitty old bracelet is nice for completeness, but it would live in the box - replaced by a more modern one.

Was that Kendrick Jewelers? Guy there, I think his name is Matt, used to call me about once every month or so when he would get a used SD in. He had one a while back for around $5k - full kit. I wish I had had the scratch back then given what these go for now.

I'd be ok w no papers if its a seller you can trust (I've done this 3x ... twice on Tudor and once on Rolex). Priority should be:

1) Dial / hands
2) Dial / hands
3) see 1 & 2
4) Papers
5) Bracelet

BTW you can always get service papers later that help with resale (e.g, service by RUSA, Bob Ridley, etc) if that's important to you.

Awesome - thank you very much for the replies. The seller is a Rolex dealer and established jeweler in Kentucky. Good people.

Case condition, at least for me, is above papers. You can't add a bunch of metal back to an overpolished case. And there is nothing as special as an untouched case, even if it's all scratched up.

I'm interested in the upper bound of what LAWW can do. Your Tudor case looks great from what I've seen. Can they do anything about thin crown guards?

best to give them a call and discuss your case in particular: there is much they can do but they need to see a photo of the piece. Beau has done numerous projects for me.

many of these older watches make their way into the used market via the death of an owner and resulting estate sales. many resellers have no boxes/papers to sell.
a good condition unmolested watch is worth it.

Okay here’s the pic. What do you think? Hands look a little too new for a ‘74? Same w bezel. Or it could just be a really nice one.

I don't see anything I like on that watch. The lume on the dial looks... not good.

Zooming in I think I agree. Some odd bubbling of the markers. Hands also look new.

When did these prices shoot into this stratosphere? About 4 yrs ago I took one of these in trade for a damn Bell and Ross BR02 plus about a grand to the other guy. I guess I'll add this model to the list watches that would've net me a small fortune if I held onto them for more than a couple months.

I agree with Jacob that you can do better condition wise. Case looks over-polished, hands don't seem to match dial, and the dial plots are multi-colored.

Here's a pic of the one I had. I traded for a PO 8500 :banghead:
