River Rat – love to see some of your collection. My Eterna’s are mostly dress. It all started with my Opa (grandfather’s) 1957/58 gold capped Eterna Matic. I am a little upset that Enicar (the real ones pre-1980) have risen in price…I got my first Enicar (since stolen) when I was 10 years old when we lived in Singapore – my first experience with the art of bargaining…

My youngest’s 10th birthday today and it is all excitement – we still must go to school. Also, my wife’s birthday. Her main present did not get delivered (lost somewhere), but I have the backup one - (fancy french fry pan - she is such a practical girl - I am lucky)

Here is a photo as the girls called it: “The Mighty Volvo”. For its footprint, there was a lot of car inside…. I would still have it, if it were not for the incompetence of the local motor mechanics. The last one (who really Donald Ducked it) told me it was an “exotic” can and need to go to “one of those fancy specialists in the Big Smoke” …idiot.

Since it was the School Commuting Chariot I needed a quick fix – enter the Camry V6. As much as I hate to say this…it is a bloody good car. I call it the washing machine – it is white and lacks character.

Snootydog – The 500 Abarth 695 esse esse was a nice car – it actually kept up with traffic. I was pulled over by the police at 4am doing a test drive at 140km – not bad as I said to the policeman – he was a young bloke and told me to go home as no one would believe him that I could do 140km
The Lancia Beta (bought new) was a FIAT 124 with front-wheel drive: not a bad car, but after FIAT bought them, the lost all the Lancia-Charm.

The 1972 Fulvia HF 1600 was another beast entirely: 800kg with a V-4 that put out more power/litre than the equivalent Porsche 911 2.4 S. Handling was on a far higher plain. No wonder it won many World Rally Championships.

I had the 911 and the Fulvia at the same time…so I could impartially compare. Financially the 911, as a pure driver’s car the Fulvia. But as with most Italian cars – passion, pain and built like shit.

Before the 911, I had all registered and in the garage: FIAT 124 CC Sport 1800, Alfa 105 Series Bertone GTV 2000 and the little 1.6 litre Fulvia HF….

Best overall - FIAT 124 CC Sport (1974 - I think I may have some years a little wrong) – yes it was not the prettiest, but it was the best, especially if one lives in a city.

Now I am in the bush and I think I have chosen well with the 928. But the shit county roads make the ride a little harsh. I have some 15” wheels (the originals) and that may/I hope make the ride less jarring. But on the highway -WOW!!!! - not even our big V8 American derived cars can touch it. Sorry guys...as Tom Cruise said " Porsche - there is not substitue"

Ahoy Dan! Welcome. That was quite an introduction. I suspect that many of us in this hobby are at least somewhat OCD. Certainly there is an obsessive component to my collecting. I really appreciate you mentioning your autism. My oldest girl is autistic, and it helps as a parent to be able to cast eyes ( figuratively of course ) on the occasional adult making a successful life on the spectrum. It gives me hope for her future.

I love that Volvo, by the way. Shame you couldn’t get it sorted properly.

I am getting too old and too grumpy to try and pretend I am normal. We all have some dysfunction. 2 out of my 3 girls have issues – the youngest is normal – bitch…. My eldest is great at maths (math for you Americans…ha-ha), shit at communications (and she is female). I can totally relate to her.

The first step is to admit it. 10 years in therapy (I started going every few days, then weekly, fortnightly and eventually down to monthly – there was even talk of one of those vacation places…ha-ha) and the only reason I am not there today is the local psychiatrists are crap. Also, good to have a wife, who tells me “you cannot say that” ….

The issue never goes away, and it always remains, but after many years of trying to feel empathy, compassion etc…I can intellectualise it and put on a “normal” persona. I am still the same bloke inside, just now the outside world thinks I am only a little odd.

Hence, I am no good working in groups. I see the obvious answers and get really frustrated when we must go through the tedious process to get to the answer. Spending time in Dan Land in the bush is perfect.

I did a Graduate Diploma in Psychology and this helps. I also have a Bachelor’s Degree and a Masters.

I am pushing myself this year and was invited to join the local Environmental and Sustainability Committee at the local Council – I have given myself 4 meetings before I call them all idiots and do my own thing.

Matt, we are convinced that one of the best electrical engineers we’ve worked with is on the spectrum. He was quite a coworker and would come across as frighteningly wacky until you figured him out. The former employer flew him worldwide to help with issues and big refinery maintenance jobs. Everyone has their skills and can be successful.

I sometimes wonder if some people are just super intelligent and have a wacky sense of humor. They aren't necessarily suffering from some disorder.
