New Guy from Australian Bush

Hi Guys

I would like to say hi and introduce myself. I contacted Matt and he said it was OK.

I am Dan Fock from Orange NSW Australia. A small regional centre in the middle of the bush. We have no permanent water supply, shit internet, highest council rates in Australia, electricity and gas is expensive, it is a cultural, intellectual and professional wasteland. (Buying a house is cheap, but everything else is not). I am all for buying local, but when the local businesses stick it to you…makes no economic sense.

It sucks, but my wife is an Orange girl and has family here and we have 3 daughters under 14 years old and we wanted them to grow up in a (reasonably) safe environment. Makes it all worthwhile and there is no traffic…. Orange is named after Willem of Orange (the Dutch Prince who became King of England), I am from Dutch roots (was ostracised as a child for not speaking English) and Orange is the national colour of the Netherlands…perfect.

I am a grumpy old fart who is now sick and tired of all the politics and I write monthly to the corrupt politicians, hoping to make a difference for my girls – I call them the Kinderfocken. I may as well be talking to my imaginary dog.

I run a small accounting practice with all my clients out of Orange – as I am on the autism spectrum, have OCD and am disassociated withdraw, I work well alone. The odd client drops by, and this makes me very agitated. So, the internet is perfect for me. Plus, I own OWC (Orange) Watch Company.

I am an overzealous watch collector with over 2,000 (mainly Enicar and Eterna) and have a few hundred clocks (mainly Zenith). I have stolen my wife’s label maker and all things are labelled and catalogued (excel and on my accounting software). I am a little geek and have built all my 5 PC’s.

Saying that I am not good with phones. I have a Samsung Note.

I love small Italian cars, having more than 40 cars: FIAT (850, 500, 124, 125 Spyder) Lancia (Fulvia, Beta) Alfa (GTV 1750, 2000). There were a few moments of madness, when I owned a Mercedes Benz 280 TE, 280 CE (that I gave to Dad as his Jag was costing him too much) 190E 2.6, Volvo 960 Estate, Honda City, Civic and a Daihatsu Handi Van – it was handy. Although the school run, and the country mechanics have dictated my move to a Golf and a Camry V6 (it had to be the V6).

2017 was a bad year for me. I was in a bad space and basically had my head up my bottom and avoided the world. Hoping 2018 will be better and I will try to interact with the world more. In that year I decided to be practical and sold my 1971 Porsche 911 and bought a more practical car to work on a Porsche 928 – a far more practical car and one that is a joy to drive.

Hope to meet some good people – thank you for reading.

Nice, Orange Watch Company.

I love Australian Bush, especially the straw colored ones. It's almost never dry out there surprisingly.

Hi Dan! Welcome to DWC. Thanks for joining. With a collection like yours, I’m sure you’ll have a lot to offer.

Beware the traditional new guy ribbing.

I have an appreciation for Eterna, but I’m a noob on vintage watches. I had one of the newer models for a bit, but had to let it go to fund my SLA017.

It was a very cool watch, but running a Sellita movement always struck me as odd for the brand that designed the 2824-2.

My OWC is one of my favorite beach / surf watches. You’ve got some of the best AR in the business.

As much as the new(er) Porsche is probably "better" in all quantifiable ways, there will always be something about those old air-cooled 911's that is just classically cool.

3mins before we go…..
Yes mate agree. I miss the old 911. But Kate (the 928) has Air Con and is still very chuckable. Not as raw as the 911…but different. Porsche do not make bad cars, they are just different.

Welcome.
For some foolish reason I had assumed Orange, California was home to OWC. I guess there's probably a city called Orange in most state, province and territory in every English speaking country in the world. Doh!

Welcome Dan! Fellow accountant here.

A 40 cars collection and a 2,000 watches collection is quite impressive, hope to see some pictures... specially of the Alfas.

Welcome Dan, and thanks for one of the most interesting intro posts I've read here (or any other watch forum, form that matter).

Like your watches too. Hope to own a snowflake someday.

Nothing wrong with a little bush. It's just got to be well maintained.

You’re not the only one making that assumption. The one person I know with an OWC watch bought it shortly after moving to California. I assumed it was a local brand she came across.

Welcome to the forum.
