STP3-13 heads up

Post by toxicavenger » Sat Jan 06, 2018 11:55 am

Hey guys i just wanted to give you a heads up on this movement. So far we have had 5 of them in for service, it seems there is a kelyess issue with them that might end up being super common. On top of that all of them have felt like shit when trying to adjust the time. I am not saying they are all like this but so far that has been our experience.

Good to know.

I didn’t even know Stone Temple Pilots were in the watch biz.

One of them was mine, but it was the STP1-11. When it failed the second time, I had Terry just do a swap with an ETA 2824.

EDIT: The 3-13 is just a variant of the 1-11 per A Blog to Watch...

“The STP1-11 is produced in a few versions including the STP3-13 and STP5-15 which have "open heart" views of the balance wheel. STP also produces the STP6-15 which is a fully skeletonized version of the STP1-11. They further produce an increasing array of modules meant to fit on top of the base STP1-11 movement which add additional functionality. These include the STP2-12-1, STP2-12-3, and the STP2-12-6 which each have a power reserve indicator and various calendar information.”

I didn't know that a kelyess issue was, so I googled it. I still don't know what it is.
No, it's not Tourettes.

And some micros. I think NTH uses them also.

I guess not too surprising. I was an early adopter of the Soprod A-10, choosing to use it in my OWC. I had to send that watch back to Australia twice in order to fix it. Turns out it was heavily over oiled from the factory. Once the movement was cleaned and properly re-oiled, it has run well since.

I heard that on the OWC's but the Aegir's I had were perfect.

Steinhart seems to have had a run of tough luck with A-10's as well. They've stopped using them on their "premium" line and returned to using 2892's.

I don't think it was anything Aegir did, or OWC and Steinhart didn't do, with the Soprod movements. I think the over-oiling occurred at the factory and would've been impossible to notice when casing the movement.

It isn't really that surprising to hear of a new movement having teething pains. The only advisement I would give if you decide to try a newer movement design, is to make sure you work with a brand who has a good customer service policy. OWC definitely stood behind their product for me to diagnose and correct the issue. My only negative is it took two visits back to Oz (at $90 per trip in shipping) to finally address the issue.

I had one Aegir that had an issue and he took care of it immediately via his US watchmaker. Very good experience.

The new release from Mercer has the 1-11. Good looking watch, but the movement turns me off.

I’ve had many SPT1-11 Watches including various Zodiacs and some micros.
Had two with issues. Seems later batches have worked out kinks though no way to be sure that i know of.
Buying one new from AD or brand directly is not too bad as they’ll handle any issues but buying used could be tricky with some warranties not being transferable

That’s a Lesson Learned for me. Picked my Zodiac up used from here and that owner bought it off another forum and the original owner from Jomashop. That’s why I decided to do the movement swap after the second time the movement failed.

No problems with my Zodiac, and I wore the hell out of it last year.
