why won't anybody touch Girard Perregaux?
why won't anybody touch Girard Perregaux?
Look, I get it – $14k for a Laureato is goddamned ludicrous, but is their pricing structure the biggest reason why ADs seem to avoid this brand like the plague? GP seems to have the history and the in-house manufactory that (on paper) would put them in league with JLC/AP/VC, etc. but consumers certainly haven't bought into the lore. Or is it not the price, but rather the fact that they just don't have a winning classic yet?
Hell, every brand has had some stinkers, but GP seems have made some great stuff in the last 5 or so years, and nobody cares. Rightfully so, or nah?

FOR ME, In person, their high end diver while it looks cool, doesn't *feel* any better made than a PO, if in fact maybe a little not as nice? They feel about as nice as a Eterna or Maurice or Longines or whatever. My definition of nice is the cohesiveness and proportions of the design. The fine finishing details of the hands, etc.
There are some watches like a Bremont Supermarine or Nomos that feels like they punch above their weight but if you put a ROO or Overseas next to a GP diver, it's obvious they're not in the NBA.

I won’t touch Girard because I’m a dude and he’s a dude and I don’t roll like that.

I think they're in a weird area where they're trying to charge Blancpain like prices for watches that are just not as good looking even though they have the horological background and things are very in house.

I think the prices scare most off. For those not scared by the prices, I think a lot of their offerings are either too big or too out there design wise for most people.
Re: why won't anybody touch Girard Perregaux?
That's an extremely good point. I've never handled one, outside of a neat vintage Sea Hawk I stumbled on in a pawn shop years ago. Still sorta wish I'd bought it.FlyPenFly wrote: ↑Mon Nov 27, 2017 2:36 pmFOR ME, In person, their high end diver while it looks cool, doesn't *feel* any better made than a PO, if in fact maybe a little not as nice? ...Wasn't Timeless a GP AD until somewhat recently? Can Brett or Dan chime in on why they're not anymore? Asking for a friend

Their current diver looks really nice in person. But feels a little hollow too for some reason.
I think their main issue is they've never designed a watch where it was like, Holy Shit I need this watch. I can't stop thinking about this watch.

Because most of them are ugly, all of them are expensive, and none of them hold value.

Owned a Sea Hawk to John Harrison a while back, but sold it fairly quickly. My favorite Girard Perregauxs weren't GPs at all, but Ebels. Had a Type E and a 1911 with GP 3300 movements. Those were nice. And under the radar.

That is certainly not the impression that I got, when I came over last week!hoppyjr wrote:I won’t touch Girard because I’m a dude and he’s a dude and I don’t roll like that.

AP asking prices for Jean Richard finish with in house movement. Secondary market has their true value assessed correctly, imo.

More beautiful than an ARPO at approximately the same price, but with better resale and more horological significance?tattoo chef wrote: ↑Mon Nov 27, 2017 4:12 pmI’ll say this..this one is beautiful

To be honest, I can’t afford either. And if I could I wouldn’t be worried about resale value.
