Sub-C or SD4K
Sub-C or SD4K
I have a chance to buy a SD4K BNIB. I would have to sell my Sub-C to make the purchase. The Sub is the watch I've worn for both my children's births so it has sentimental ties. I like the date option on the SD4K, but from there it's not a HUGE difference.
So is it worth trying to sell the Sub or should I keep it? Go!

Wise man say, don’t sell your first Sub. Keep it for your kid, and save for a 16600 (which is the great pre-C Sea-Dweller reference.)
Re: Sub-C or SD4K
I started with a Sub and it was my daily for almost three years. Sold it for the SD, which is currently my one and only that I'll never sell. I've also had two more Subs since that I sold off eventually (and want a third). I love them both, but the SD is a truly special watch IMO. And they certainly aren't making any more. They wear very different and there was an adjustment period after I first made the switch.

Sub-C or SD4K
SD wears slightly smaller and taller. Combined with the added weight, it just feels more technical and compact IMO. Sub wears wider and flatter.
Visually, I find the SD much more interesting to look at. I prefer the fully indexed bezel insert and the raised crystal is a thing of beauty. The slimmed down lugs make a big difference to me in having a more classic look. I also prefer the matte dial on the SD.
If you end up selling, let me know. I may be in the market

The SD-C is currently extremely expensive. Unless you're getting a crazy good deal I would absolutely never sell a watch with sentimental value so that I could overpay for something that I may or may not like more.

And it does wear small and tall, which depending on your wrist could be a good or a bad thing.

It does. Good for me, bad for most.Panerai7 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2017 10:18 am+1JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2017 10:15 amThe SD-C is currently extremely expensive. Re: Sub-C or SD4K
I've owned both modern sub no date models and both modern SD models. The only one I have now is the 16600 and I absolutely love it. It could be my only watch without issue.
Only you know the value of being sentimental. While I appreciate it, I don't put sentimental value in possessions, so selling them is never an issue. Just make sure you're making the right choice before selling it, because as others have said, the ceramic prices are momentarily cracked out.

I have a 6 3/4" ish wrist that's quite flat, so I "think" it would be good. I've tried the SD on in the past, but it's been a bit.Panerai7 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2017 10:18 am+1JP Chestnut wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2017 10:15 amThe SD-C is currently extremely expensive. Regardless of wrist size, every version of the SD gives off a "tall for its size" vibe. Whereas the Sub is flatter and larger in apparent diameter.Sniper13 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2017 10:41 amI have a 6 3/4" ish wrist that's quite flat, so I "think" it would be good. Re: Sub-C or SD4K
This. Had the Sub and sold it for the SD and I’m very happy that I did. No sentimental ties to the Sub so can’t speak to that but I echo what’s said above. The raised crystal, the bezel, the slimmer lugs, the helium valve all add up to a visually stunning piece on the wrist. It also wears a little low key for me with the matte dial which I like. My wrist is also 6 3/4” and the fit is perfect although I did add a half-link from the Sub.Chocodove wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2017 10:14 amSD wears slightly smaller and taller. I guess the masses have spoken. I'm going to keep the Sub-C. The Sub is my first Rolex, which I'll pass down to my oldest. Thanks for the input both ways.
